  • So watch Tats video 50 times and I'll know how to patch from the get-go. My plan ...

(started with electronics as a schoolboy)
My 1st 'synth' was an old tube radio of which I fed back the additional speaker out into the record player's input and then turned up volume, which gave really cool blobs and beeps.
The circuit was then refined by whatever capacitors and coils I got my hands on... :D

That sounds awesome. Did you play music through the radio to feed into it? My first one was a breadboard synth with a 555 timer. All that stuff is really fun to experiment with

Same here! Still have it built, but I ended up adding some amps and filters which doesn't work any more

Since they broke out parts of it into individual AU modules I use iVCS3 a lot more. It's like having a customisable version that you don't really need to understand the Synthi way of doing things (pin matrix) to use.

A fairly steep learning curve for most but sonically it's right up there, have had some delightful experiences running Autony & Cality into it.

If one understands the basic parts of a subtractive synth, the VCS3 is pretty straightforward. I don't think the pin matrix is hard to learn if one understands how oscillators, filters, amps and envelopes relate to each other. The pin-matrix, if anything, makes it much easier (an ipad screen) to see how things are set up than the patch cords of Moog Model 15.

It probably seems confusing if one tends to use synths by choosing presets and fiddling with knobs without any interest in the synth architecture.

The one thing that I did find confusing was how to program the step sequencer -- which is pretty straightforward but not obvious from the docs. There is a good YouTube video that covers it, thankfully.

No, it was a self contained instrument. The radio was set to vinyl playback, but instead of the record player I connected the output supposed to drive a 2nd speaker to the player input.
Plain feedback controlled by volume and the treble and bass tone dials - which had cool visual representations as moving notes on a stave when turning the knobs.
You'd probably fry a transistor radio by that procedure, but a tube radio works different.
Early days of circuit bending... :D

Hi all. Digging into this app alot. Did the 3 Daveypoo videos (tutorials) and found them very helpful.
I've gone a bit further and added the 3rd oscillator in and I cannot - for the life of me - get it track pitch properly! I've checked my settings but it must be something in that frequency that i've missed. Or, in looking at some of the presets, is it not 'supposed to' track like a normal oscillator?
    Anyone offer up any help?

    edit
Just watched a video and found my answer - Osc 3 is essentially the LFO. Yay!

  • Straight from the mouth of the man himself, James Edward Cosby:

"Osc3 tracks at 0.26 volts per octave so if you want all three oscillators to track simultaneously like a minimoog for example patch osc1&2 with white pins as normal on row 8 but patch Osc3 with a red pin in K8 setting the Red Pins Value to 0.8125. This is the ratio between the volts per octave of Osc1&2 and Osc3."

  • Don't thank me, thank Mr. Cosby!

But yeah - you're welcome. So glad you're enjoying this app and the videos too.

  • Just updated with great great IAP called captivity for just 5.49 euros. Love this synth. Maybe my favorite.

  • I see that the IAPs have gone on sale. The Essential EMS Modifications was my clear first choice. Do any of the rest come highly recommended? How much overlap is there between the different JEC banks? Opinions on JEC 2019 Synths-Explorations?

I haven’t yet bought the latest one but here is the man himself earlier this year:

    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/40330/ivcs3-back-panel-audio-inputs-sampler-used-to-carry-control-voltages

I also like LALA Sampler and Digital Jeepney banks, DJ also has a series of excellent YouTube tutorials.

  • Several IAPs should be free right now. At least that’s what the App Store says...

  • I'm inclined towards the Synths-Explorations because it seems like a good starting point, and I like the idea of color coding as a learning exercise. And towards the Sinapsya Under the Dust presets, because they are $.99 right now and sound pretty good in the video. Much else might be too advanced and a waste on me at this stage.

  • would you also get it for iphone-only workflow?

  • IVCS3 is superb. A monster. Very, very impressed.
I wish there was a “favorites” feature for presets. Right now I’m saving presets I like under a new “user” folder but you have to enter a name and it’s a bit cumbersome. Any advice on preset management?.

  • Hey everyone,__

The new iVCS3 Preset Bank “Captivity“ is available now...

Just update to the latest iVCS3 version to make it available. The bank has 256 Presets covering Basses, Leads, Motion Pads, and Evolving Soundscapes, in addition, it also comes with 34 CV LFO/Envelope Files which are also usable in your own patches. (I can explain more about this if anyone is interested... perhaps even in a new dedicated thread?)

Have fun, hope you’ll be inspired...

    ...Additional news..

The iVCS3 App is now discounted for those that don’t have it yet and for those that do, most IAPs are also discounted.

Hi James, yes, why not start a thread and tell us about those lfo / envelope files, cheers!

  • ^ this! Very interested!
