Ipad - Midi Controllers - Options - Compliance

I believe I have discovered a gap in my workflow. I don't really have a good midi controller keyboard setup. I have a keystep, and I have a Korg Nano Control. I really want a keyboard with more than 25 keys but I don't want 61 either. So, it looks like a 37 or a 49. i would like to have enough assignable knobs that I can use it to midi learn various ios synths. It would be an added bonus if those assignments could be saved. An even bigger bonus would be to be able to label the knob assignments on the actual midi controller.

I have looked at a few options and would like to know of more that are used by others and how user friendly they are, pros - cons, etc. Not sure if I should care about the software that comes with a new unit or buy used and save the money if the software doesn't matter.

I have looked at:

Novation SL 37 - Feedback - class compliant?
Novation SL MK2 49 - Feedback - class compliant?
Novation X-Station 25 - I am worried about having enough assignable knobs
Novation Launchkey 49 - Are the 8 assignable knobs able to be used as 16 because of a shift function or bank option, if not, are 8 knobs enough?
Arturia Keylab - Feedback - class compliant?
Arturia Analog Experience - Feedback - class compliant?
Others Not Listed? --

Can I use my 37 keystep to go into a controller with a bunch of knobs, like the akai MidiMix and use them together as one unit to control AniMoog or Model D on iOS?

Any suggestions would be great, and thank you all for your input.

Novation SL 37 is working out of the box, no problem.
Nice keyboard, plenty of knobs and faders, two displays, but for me too big in size.

I like the idea to use a KORG Minilouge as the main midicontroller for the iPad. 😎
I like the size, the amount of useful knobs and switches and of course, it’s a full analog synthesizer as well...🎶

  • I investigated the Arturia key lab series as I saw it in a demo video and loved the look. However, the 88 note version seems to be problematic from what I read. Not sure about the smaller versions, but like father like son.....

I have the Arturia Minilab in use. I think it’s the best minikey in the 24 range. I love the 16 knobs for tweaking... 😊
But I’m afraid the minilab will not fit the needs of pianoplyer like you. 😎

  • As I said, the 88 key version has big problems. Glad the smaller one is so good cause it really looks good

When I need 88 keys, I connect my old Roland E-Piano with my iPad.👍
Not a real midi-controller but good enough for my needs when I like to recording piano...

There are a lot of good ( and expensive) choices for 88s cause you get into weighted and hammer action. I actually have been recording my iOS stuff on a crummy keyboard over the summer, a Casio AT5 which is a decent enough workstation for $500, and surprisingly sensitive. In Istanbul I have a Roland FA07 which is quite great for a superior synth action, but a hell of a lot of cash for use as a 76 key keyboard controller ($1500). Unfortunately I did not even know iOS existed when I bought it last February, if I had it to do over probably a Kawaii VPC1 for the same money. It has a hammer action close to a quality acoustic.

Some years ago I was buying a cheap M-Audio Keystation 88. After 2 month I sold it because it was horrible and I purchased the Roland. What a big difference. The Roland improved my way of playing keys a lot... 🎶😎

    P.S.
I’m more a guitarist as a piano player. Your piano skills are much better than mine.

  • Hey @chandroji, I just posted the first ( I think) iOS symphony ever done. Please give a listen if you have time.

And yes, Roland is one of the better ones. The A88 controller keyboard is excellent,

  • Edirol pcr30. Class compliant, aftertouch, midi in out thru, split point, knobs, faders, pads and xfader...

The A88 uses the PHA-4 keybed. I had the PHA-4 on my Roland FP30 and I sold it because of clicky keys. At first, the keybed is outstanding, but after 1 year or 2, the keybed makes a lot of noise. Many people have had this problem.

I'm looking for an alternative. I'm looking for the Studiologic Grand 88

  • Anyone have the Studiologic Grand 88? If not, my next option for a really good weighted keybed is the Yamaha CP515 but it's expensive.

This is precisely where the X-Station shines. In each template you can assign up to 128 controls amongst the knobs, sliders and buttons.

On the X-Station, the Osc section has 5 pages, the LFO has 3, Filter has 2, as does the 2nd Envelope ADSR making 3 available.

This shows all the controls I mapped for the Novation Circuit on just one X-Station template...

  • What about the Artiphon Instrument 1 as a midi/MPE controller? What are the pros and cons?

  • What @SpookyZoo said. Plus, the 49 key version has a nice flat area for yer iPad to sit.
