I upgraded from an Air 2 to 12.9 iPad Pro 2 512gb a year ago. It definitely can handle quite a bit more complex projects. The biggest benefit to me was the extra storage and screen space. Was a lot of money but entirely worth it to me. Your mileage may vary :)
If I were in your shoes, I'd wait till the new iPad Pro comes out soon ...Rumor has it that it'll be a major redesign, no screen bezels ... Might be a good time to buy the old one on the used market.

Are you sure you’re doing what you need to do to optimize the Air 2? I get pretty good mileage out of mine. Simple things like stopping all other background apps, clearing ghost apps, and most importantly, setting buffer settings high enough can make a huge difference.

My air 2 runs multiple instances of Au plugins with no issues. It even handles 2 instances of the model 15 as au. What exactly do you mean by light load ?

  • There may be a lot of hidden background activity like all kinds of notifications, syncing and tracking going on. Check preferences. It's quite a long ride to shut off (most) everything.
Not shure if airplane mode will be sufficient, but it's the easiest way to test for a network based difference.
