Loop launcher app to use with MIDI controller - looptunes? launchpad?
I know this "loop launcher app" topic is repeating over and over, maybe because there really is no serious solution. But currently, I am more curious about "ableton-like" setup with a controller like APC40(mkII).
I really liked performing with it in the past as there is everything you need for live performance - clip launching, knobs for macros/effects, faders + crossfader + A/B assignment of tracks to crossfader sides. It's like DJing on steroids, using your own material.
The main question: Is there an app which would cover at least the basic clip launching + effects + crossfader and being able to map it on any standard MIDI controller (let's say it's APC40?)
What I am worried about the most is the ability to scroll the clip grid - there are arrows on such controllers to move up/down (scenes) and left/right (tracks). In ableton, you even have the area highlighted by red rectangle to see what you are currently controlling. Not sure if any app on iOS is currently capable of this, not even sure if the number of rows (scenes) is unlimited in some of them.
From my research I haven't found a lot of useful information. These are the candidates I was looking for but still hesitated to buy:
Novation Launchpad - seems to be only working with their Launchpads. Not bad, but for what I want, I would need multiple controllers from Novation (does it work well with camera connection kit for iPad?) Also not sure if they support their own controllers with faders (e.g. LaunchControl XL)
Mixvibes Remixlive - unfortunately no MIDI support afaik
Looptunes HD/DJ - looks really promising: MIDI support (to what extent? what about scrolling?), AB integration (can I link tracks to multiple AB channels for own fxes?), only thing that worries me was that I wasn't able to even find the ability to add more rows of clips than is currently displayed. Even if there are more rows available, I am not sure how the mapping works then...
Retronyms Hook - most appealing to me from what I've seen, but again the MIDI support is questionable. What worries me too is that it wasn't updated for more than 2 years
Other potential candidates I have found but rejected are LP-5 (only 5 channels) and BeatMaker3 (I have asked on it's forum similar question but found out it's not easy to make BM3 a typical clip launcher, although it would be the best option. I own BM3 so still hoping for better future )
Owners of Looptunes or Hook, ideally if you have Launchpad (the controller) or AKAI APC40, could you please check if I'm just dreaming or there is a chance for a simple (but not limited) loop launching setup with iPad and controller?
Thanks a lot guys!

There is no Ableton app for iOS (yet?).
Looptunes is the nearest but it require to fit your workflow in it not opposite. It means create different groups of samples (it calls these “sessions” if I remember well) and upload these as you need them. If you need go back in samples launched then doubling these should make the trick...
Launchpad with novation hardware is another option but I trust more on Looptunes dev than @AmpifyxNovation
Garageband live loops is another option but not midi support neither... there is a workaround if you only need to launch “playlist” but if you need proper clip launching forget about it.
Modstep could be another but its sampler hasn’t automatic loop timestretching (but seems v.2 will bring it)
GroupTheLoop has a similar workflow of Ableton session view but only suitable for 4+4 loops at time due its nature. Also not true “clip launcher”. Once again workflow workflow workflow...
So simplification to achieve the same results should be my advice. It should be possible with Looptunes Dj if you export some part of the Ableton project, also with GTL, also with Modstep...
The point is even when Ableton release an app for iOS it will not be exactly Ableton as desktop way due it will not make sense for them...
ReMix Live
.......yet......?
Already present in the MacBook version.
FYI
No midi mapping in ReMix Live........yet
You could say it's looping ;P
I've tried pretty much anything and everything on iPad, including a crazy setup using AUM, LoopyHD, bunch of FX, several midi controllers and Midi Designer Pro, etc. I finally broke down and got a LaunchControlXL. I fucking HATE how Novation lock their MIDI down via a proprietary handshake and it caused me to put off buying from them for like a year...
Honestly it's the only production-ready setup that works. Although it's not nearly stable enough to trust for live I don't think...Often, when tweaking filters it will cause the iOS audio engine or whatever to crash where you get no sound until you close app.
I run LaunchPad in AUM and route into Rough Rider+Maximizer+Turnado as an insert and control Rough Rider, turnado, etc. via the knobs on the Launch Control that are not used in LaunchPad, and also use the user "layers" to control other stuff in AUM.
Very powerful, very compact setup.
I only use it to remix my own loops I do with SeekBeats, Shoom, Xynthesizer, etc.
LoopTunes HD + APC40 MkI had a lot of promise (as it looks like it was essentially designed for it), but I ran into too many cases where samples came in and sounded like shit for reasons I could not track down, or the app crashed. A lot.
I also really like the way LaunchPad handles it's FX now. With selectable channels the fx apply to, mods, latching, etc.
Just my $.0002
Wow, this is much more than $.0002! 😄 Thanks for sharing your experience, seems like I was will either choose your path (launchpad and AUM) or try to rethink my workflow.
I have also bought modstep, although I am not really convinced I will find use for it now, as they don't support audio clips with time stretching, but the version 2 looks promising.
Yup. That’s the reason why I gone hardware and just keep the iPad for BlocsWave and Gsrageband.
LooptunesHD has been a bit buggy for me at least in the past no good for live use.
GarageBand is likely the best though I’m not sure about midi. Groove rider has a time stretched loop function and you can get beyond the 4 bar limitation in a few different ways.
Can you trigger Garageband Loop thing with Launchpad Pro?
For Hardware Driven apps Launchpad hard to beat.
I love Remix live so I actually use that on MacBook or at least have that and/or LP5 as supplemental (emergency background stuff)
Sure but you probably are going to break the screen...
I’d need to look further, but BeatMaker3 has the ability to “midi learn” to pads, which can have samples (and they can be VERY long). Could you assign loops to the pads in BM3, then map the controller to the pads? I did something similar a while back by assigning midi keyboard keys to pads, assigned samples to the pads, then played them in various orders. The only thing I haven’t done is see whether the content of the BM3 pads can be made to loop.
The thing that kills BM3 is there's no "latch" for the pads. It's stupid. Ton's of requests. I think the dev is just being obstinate in not adding that one simple feature. Pad latch with loop settings and it would replace LaunchPad (and be way more powerful and expandable). Yes, there are work arounds, but they require a lot more set up and you lose on-the-fly decision making ability as you have to essentially launch scenes or whatever they are called.
Of course, BM3 would be the best bet in this case, it's so close. But unfortunately, there are few missing features that makes it nearly impossible to use as a loop triggering app 😔
I have been looking for the same thing; the ability to trigger playback of loops and audio clips of any length with a midi controller.. I was poised to buy either tracklister or bm3 .. all a bit pricey and was put off by negative reviews of them crashing or forgetting midi channels. Aaaargh - anyway I wondered if Aum could do it... and it only bloody can!
You just assign your controller to launch playback of the file player... add another file player, assign the midi event to its playback and chose loop or not, sync or not and its totally stable and no extra costs incurred! Hoorah hope this helps someone..
BM3 is not expensive for what it is. It's sampler is still the best on iOS. And it is quite stable for a lot of people. The releases over the past year dramatically changed the stability.
I’ve been thinking recently about how to put together a ‘set’ that you could ‘play’/DJ live. The launchpad app by @AmpifyxNovation is basically ideal for me apart from the fact that it’s limited to 6x8 pads. That’s not enough pads to fit a set onto, and there would be silence whilst you load another session up. Could always get a drone going in AUM or something whilst you faff around I suppose 😂
What would be perfect is 2 iPads running launchpad, 2 hardware launchpads, and a basic DJ mixer in between. Then you could change sessions on one iPad whilst the other one is playing, just like cueing up the next record.
That does mean buying another iPad, and another launchpad, and a DJ mixer - all things I don’t want to have to buy.
Hmmm.
