Lyric publishing

What would you do that constitutes ‘publishing’ your lyrics?

I’m not inexperienced in the world of print publishing, having worked in magazines for most of the 80s, 90s. As a result you’d think I’d know what is and isn’t publishing. I contest that – don’t you accuse me of knowing what I’m talking about. Not for the first time in the recent year I put it to you that the whole notion of publishing is about to change and is not the firm rock we thought it was, although I’m usually warning people about the evils of social media when I say things like that. However, it holds true with our craft – songwriting.

It used to be that a publisher would, er, ‘publish’ the song to make it officially available and indisputable in terms of ownership and accountability. This is still sort of true, but what should the first publication venue be, today? Many will say that it is good enough to publish on a site or domain that one owns oneself. I’m not so sure, I don’t stick with a domain for more than a few years, often abandoning it as soon as the year is up. What has more permanence?
