Midimux / Studiomux no destination port TC-Data

Hello

I am trying to get a midimux to send midi data from tc-data on an iPhone to windows 10 however I cannot get midimux to show a destination port for tc-data to send midi to. I have made ports available via the studiomux server system tray however see no way to get tc-data to talk to these ports via midimux——-can someone please tell me how to make this work properly?

Also as a side note- does anyone have any tips for getting midi into windows reliably from iOS in any form period? I have been playing with rtp midi, midimux, MIDIberry, and copperlan for a week and I am going completely insane, none of these tools seem to be at all reliable-one minute the Bluetooth device is recognized by berry-the next not, copperlan can’t see the phone, rtp midi only works for the first session and then every time after that I need to uninstall and reinstall it just to get it to see the iPhone- totally nutty-is there anything reliable out there or does anyone have any tips? I just want to get back to making music😪😪😪😪

You didn't mention whether you're running the midimux app on the iPhone. You need to have it running. When you do, you should see TC-Data as an input, and when you connect the USB cable to your PC you should see midimux as an output.

Unfortunately I can't test the PC part because the studiomux server doesn't want to run on my PC at the moment. Once when I did have it working on a different PC it worked OK. I'll fiddle with it until I run out of patience and report back if I am able to get it working.

[edit] Works now. I seem to remember it was a requirement that iTunes (blech :s ) be installed on the PC. Did that and it works now. I see midimux and TC-Data as midi input and output destinations in FL Studio on the PC. I have to select midimux as the input for it to work. Not sure why that is.

The main point is, you have to have the midimux app running on the iPhone as well as the studiomux server on the PC.

  • Seems rock solid so far ...

  • Thank you so much for the quick reply

I do have midimux running on the phone, and I also have iTunes installed on the pc however on the phone I cannot see any destination port for tc-data, the source column is filled but destination column is empty

Do you mean that before midimux recognizes the destination port, you need to select midimux as the midi input for your DAW?

You've got it backward. You don't need TC-Data to show up as a destination port because it's a source, not a destination.

In the phone, TC-Data is the source, midimux is its destination. In the PC, midimux is the source and your DAW is the destination. Midimux is the middle-man.

In your PC DAW, select midimux as the input. It should then receive data from your phone without any problem. it works here anyway.

  • That makes sense but I cannot get midimux to show up in the studiobus system tray or within my DAW as input-any ideas?

  • Check to see that iTunes recognises your phone, if it dosn't that is the first thing to fix.

  • I don’t think anything will show up in the studiomux system tray. I think that only shows audio sources from studiomux. Maybe.

I’m on Windows 7. That could make a difference, though I think I did try int on Windows 10 once. The usual IT question: have you tried rebooting? (Seriously)

  • Hmmm yes ITunes does recognize the phone

I am running Windows 10 and the studiomux system tray definitely is used to select midi ports, I just can’t find a way to get it to actually show the virtual ports created on the phone by midimux or aknowledge a connection to midimux in any other way

  • Which DAW are you using?

  • Found I had to use Midi Flow Adaptor inside Audiobus 3 to make TC Data work with anything outside of standalone maybe that’s the problem. Have you tried routing it via Midiflow.

  • I am using Ableton.

Jumper, are you saying the workflow is load audiobus with an instance of midifllow inside of it connected to tc-data? Want to make sure I understand the routing properly

  • Bringing Audiobus into this is only complicating things.

IMO, the focus right now should be on why Ableton isn’t recognizing midimux as a midi input source. Regardless of whether TC-Data is connected or not, midimux has to be recognized as an input on the PC side our you’re going to get nowhere. I’m guessing there’s an issue with Windows 10 or that firewall or anti-virus software are blocking the traffic.

You didn’t say whether iTunes is recognizing the iPhone or not. That’s one easy diagnostic. Also uninstalling, re-installing, studiomux Server, then rebooting might help. Try a different USB cable and port as well, just in case.
