Folders for sessions in AUM?
I'm going through the various session files in AUM and I would like to make a folder of those that show real promise (I would probably call this file "Keepers". Is there any way to create and then move these sessions to a separate folder in AUM? I've been poking around, but not having any luck. Mind you, I'm not talking about the Audioshare recordings folders - that works great.

If you are on IOS 11, you can use the Files app. In the ‚on my iPad‘ folder you find the AUMs app folder, contain all session. With the Files app, you can create new folders and move the session files into their folders. You can create/use folders inside folders.
Last week i went through the same process - sorting AUM sessions into folders (while i openened them one after another in AUM...)
You also can add a folder name in AUM when you save a session. For folders in folders use the / as separator - like in „WIP/archive“
A problem with AUM is you can’t save a session into an existing folder unless you know the name of it and enter it into the Save dialog. Or am I missing something?
@_ki - thanks!
@anickt Yes, you are right. Thats why i did all file moving in the Files app. Another reason for using the Files app was to keep the filedates intakt.
If you then in load a session from a folder in AUM, the AUM save dialog will contain the correct folder path.
You have to tread carefully with any audio files recorded and saved in an AUM project.
The AUM projects are stored in ‘On my iPad’ and can be accessed through the Files app - this can use a normal hierarchical file structure. Therefore you can have a project call MyProject.aumproj nested as follows Test/Test/MyProject.aumproj. This works OK AUM will allow you to load the project from the any location within the folder structure. This is fine if the project just contains channel strips with IAA or AU3 Instruments/fx.
Audio files recorded in AUM are handled in a different way - they are stored within the AudioShare filespace and are accessible within a folder called ‘AUM Recordings’ - the problem here is that AUM does not save into AudioShare using the same hierarchical file path - it uses a flat folder system which just uses the project name - it does not honour the nested folders.
So you could have two projects with the same name located in different folders within the Files app as follows Test/MyProject.aumproj and Test/Test/MyProject.aumproj - no problem unless you record audio files within each project - they will be saved in AudioShare both in the same folder called MyProject. This in itself is not a problem unless you tidy up in AudioShare some time later and delete the folder MyProject because you have deleted the AUM project in Test/Test/MyProject.aumproj Forgetting that you have another reference to audio that it contain in Test/MyProject.aumproj.
Simplified - although the location of the project data maybe unique, the location of audio files that they reference may not be.
@ageezz Thanks for the remarks regarding AUM audio recordings - as long as one does not use the same project name in different folders one should be on the safe side.
Yep. I often wind up with several similarly named but not quite the same folders! It would be dreamy if 'Save Session' could somehow just tie in to the Files app. That way J Lilla wouldn't have to waste a bunch of time creating a UI for the folders (or adding autocomplete or some 'pick a folder first' UI or...) since the Files app already does this. iOS 12?
Files app (assuming you're on iOS 11) is definitely the best way to go for a bunch of existing sessions that you want to categorize. However, for a new session, saving in AUM then jumping to Files to organize is a bit of a hassle.
Yes, in AUM it's rather clunky for saving to folders directly, you have to type in the folder name, and if you misspell it, you'll create a new folder with the misspelling.
To get around this, I employ a simple strategy of just having a numbered series of folders. This way, when I save a session (or open an old session to categorize it) it's easy to remember folder names as they're just a single digit.
Since I make use of Audiobus as well (for state saving IAA apps and to use the slide-over control bar or Audiobus Remote), I can prepend that number to the Audiobus preset names and keep that organized as well.
Obviously, my scheme is tailored to my workflow (live recording of songs), but this approach could be useful for others to consider. Folder names (or prefixes) 0 - 5:
0 = fully finished, recorded works; the archive
1 = tracks that just need to be recorded. I have the song structure and details fully worked out
2 = tracks that I have a basic structure for, but I need to work out additional sections, details, turnarounds, etc.
3 = 4 bar / 8 bar riffs / grooves that I like but need a lot of work to develop
4 = tests and experiments that are interesting for the test / experiment, but aren't really good music
I see the problem there! I guess that also the recordings should follow the same folder structure as the session?
Also, I'm planning to add a better UI for choosing/creating destination folder, so you don't need to remember the folder names..
All sounds good. Not a major issue to contend with in the meantime. As the iOS music universe goes a pace file handling is becoming more of an issue. Apple has not helped at all with their appalling Files app and it’s clunky UI and functionality.
