Korg Odyssei ... as the wallet turns

So ... we are running down on the summer sale. I've been on-the-fence about this one for a bit. But, I'm a sucker for Korg and for their well done emulations. Do I need it? No. Do I want it ... ?

It's been out since 2016 so how is it holding up sound-wise? The stuff I've read about it were pretty glowing but that was when newly released. I know it's not AU but how do you get along with it outside of Gadget? Stable in Cubasis?

I'm still thinking of iSem. Is this anywhere near the same league as Odyssei? Thoughts welcomed and encouraged.

  • I really like the iOdyssei and his very unique sound character. For me this Synth is one of the best emulated Synthesizer from Korg. Love the sound more than the iMono/Poly or iPolysix. The sale price is a no brainer... 😊

For me it was a good buy!

  • I've been on the fence about it also. I try to own the emulations of the hardware I cannot afford. That said, iSem is a total no-brainer. I personally prefer it over the sound of iMonopoly.

  • I do like the app, sounds good & fun to explore etc.
All well and good - that said, I find I rarely use it.
If you are a heavy Gadget user, it’s a great addition to the arsenal.
But it does soak up the cpu, and multiple instances in a large Gadget project can cause havoc and heatstroke. Also, the cool arpeggiator in the standalone app is NOT present in Gadget. Huh? Even worse is the midi implementation in the standalone, pretty dreadful, like most Korg apps... you would think the company that practically invented the keyboard workstation would have this figured out by now.

    Poor midi implementation indeed:

A shame...An ARP without a clock, and they call it "ARP Odyssey"...Maybe by CV gate ?...
But yeah sounds big and shinny, maybe if you want to sample it...But no sampler with timestretching with a midi clock or/and Link that stays in line on IOS...Hahaha...Soon...

The arpeggiator is present in all gadget in the scale menu. There’s also something in Gadget known as a sequencer which is an arpeggiator using blocks instead of sliders. >:)

Odyssey is funky but if you haven’t got Monopoly it’s a much better synth and less CPU intense as well.

  • iOdyssey is, to me, the best Korg release on iOS as far as sound quality and character goes. Its onboard sequencer and modulator is a blast to use, which makes it the funnest as well.

I cannot legitimately defend the poor MIDI, so I will concede that.

  • This is all great info. Thx all!

Gadget’s so-called arpeggiator is an entirely different animal than the one built into iOddysei. It has none of the functionality or flexible options, it’s really got nothing to do with the OP’s remarks, nor my own.

As a bit of synth history trivia, the original ARP company name does not refer to arpeggiation, but rather the initials of company founder/inventor Alan Robert Pearlman.
Perhaps if his name had been Robert Alan, RAP music could have been something entirely different today.

  • It’s a good synth, one of my visual favourites of the Korg apps. I wouldn’t call it essential though, unless you’re a big Gadget user.

Good sound, nice UI - but usual poor Korg MIDI support and a CPU hog.

Would I buy it again? Not if I was on this Air2, but probably for a faster device.

  • Yep. I’d agree with what most people said here.

It sounds nice. But I don’t use it that much because:

    • it’s very cpu intensive in Gadget
    • the controls are a little fiddly and small - especially the pitch slider. If you touch this, good luck getting it where you want it to be in Gadget
    • I’ve never completely understood it’s way of programming

I prefer Mono/Poly for a ‘big and proper’ synth inside Gadget.

Well the arp you like isn’t present but you left out the fact that there is an arp. I was just making an addendum to your point.

  • @amarok ah, my bad, thanks for music history and Mr Pearlman's legacy ! :)

  • All right. So yes, I decided to grab it. Just ... one ... more Korg synth. Yeah yeah yeah, I know.

I will refrain from saying things like — WOW this is sooo good. This synth is so fat and juicy! ODYSSEi is the best Korg synth! etc etc etc.

Even though these things are most likely all true and not hyperbole on my part.

  • I think one thing we can all agree on is the 'Odyssei' naming attempt was awful. iOdyssey and be done with it, easy.

I hate the name Odessei almost as much as I hate Maschine

That’d be a good other thread (it shouldn’t be this one) – synth apps with shit names and what they should have been.

  • It‘s my go-to synth in Gadget. Instant classic sounds.

    LOL hint taken :D

  • I bought this, it sounds great 👍

Sounds fantastic but as others have pointed out the amazing ARP Model 1623 Sequencer emulation in the standalone syncs with absolutely nothing. It's also a pity the killer standalone patches that rely the ARP/Sequencer are incompatible with it's paired down Gadget version Lexington. I bought ODYSSEi the day it came out, October 31, 2016, noticed it wouldn't sync with anything despite the Tempo Sync switch, it even doesn't sync with Gadget, wrote to KORG many times with no response. I personally refuse to buy another KORG app till this gets a bug fix.
