My AUM troubles

Renamed a bunch of files through the files app (putting a set list in order!) but when opening the file it would open with the old name (so I had to rename it twice). Another problem I had is that I lost the last round of changes I had made to a file after renaming the file through the files app. So I had to do all my changes again and then rename them in AUM.

Also, is there no default way to get AUM to accept a tempo change in ableton sync when loading a new file? It asks every time whether I want to change the tempo, which I do, which is why I set that tempo in the first place. I’m trying to weed out every little time consuming thing I have to do between loading songs (for a live set) and that’s a small thing that seems unnecessary. Now if only Patterning 2 was an AU or could load the correct song with the AUM file.......

  • Link always asks what you want to do with the tempo, so if you join an already open link session, you don’t automatically hijack the session, and change tempo for who or whatever is already playing

Right, but it’s whole new session, instead of hijacking one....and I know what the tempo should be already. Just would be nice if I had the option to say, ‘stop asking me’, or ‘the answer is always yes’

Have you tried working in AB3?
Does Patterning 2 have state saving in AB3?

  • Hmm...Problem is AUM is not the "master" of Link, there's no master...How could it be knowing that he has to be over all over Link sessions or apps that might running ?

  • I did try ab3 before but the trouble was not being able to control the mixer via midi... I suppose i could then route everything to AUM but Patterning doesn’t have state saving anyway.

And yeah, I get the master issue, I just wish there was a toggle to make the app behave as if I’d already hit ‘yes’, every time it asks, because other than Patterning everything is an AU and is being hosted by AUM

  • Audiobus doesn’t ask if I want to set the tempo every time I load a new session, doesn’t that mean it’s possible for AUM to do that as well?.

You may want to look at this thread... Developer stated that a BETA is in the works...

I am not 100% sure but I think the problem lies not with AUM per se but with the way the underlying protocols are working. AUM project loads and it adds the required channel strips in order - if it is loading an IAA app it will wait until it is loaded before moving on to the next. As Patterning is an IAA it loads and sets the Link tempo. When AUM has loaded all the channels it then wants to set the Link tempo to the one it has assigned to the project - if it differs from the one set by Patterning it will ask to override the current tempo.

One of the reasons that I try to only work with AU apps

There's no way for AUM to know that it's a "new" Link session, as far as I can see. It's either connected to Link or not, and while connected it asks before potentially changing the tempo for others by accident.

Just curious, then, why Audiobus doesn’t ask me if I want to switch tempos, even though it’s already connected to a link session?

Someone please make a fully functional au drums app! Please!

Perhaps they choose to not ask, but to simply ignore the tempo of the loaded project? See TEMPO-2 here: http://ableton.github.io/linkkit/#test-plan

I prefer that it asks, otherwise you can't load the real tempo of a project if Link is active.

When I switch between sessions (songs), they play at the correct tempo, so audiobus doesn’t seem to be ignoring it.

I hope I’m not seeming overly nitpicky - just trying to reduce the load time between songs - there are just enough small things to do that they can add up to my band mates waiting for me!

One other thing to add is that the Patterning songs are set to the same tempo as the sessions in AUM, but it doesn’t matter which is opened first, AUM will still ask me if I want to set the tempo.

    Would that not be obvious?
The number of current links will even be shown - if it is 0, it's a new session.

    1) The number of connections is shown in the Link view, but not available to read by the app. All the app can know is if it's connected to Link or not.

    2) Even if we could, 0 would mean there's no Link session at all and we're already in control of the tempo so there's nothing to consider.

    But I may have missunderstood

    Yes :)

If there's an active Link session when AUM loads a session file, it will ask if you want the tempo stored in the file or keep the current Link session tempo if they differ. Sorry, but I'm not going to change that in AUM. Or are you saying that it asks even if the current Link tempo already matches the tempo stored in the AUM session file?

No, the tempos don’t match when switching between songs, both in patterning and AUM . I just thought maybe AUM could have a preference to ask or not, since I always say yes, I want the tempo I saved in the file!

I could just use Audiobus and vatanator, which eliminates the issues of having to open the drums song and wait for AUM to ask me to the change the tempo, which is two of the three things I have to do each time I load a song. But with that configuration I also have to run midifire (to make my foot controller work with vatanator), MF splitter and mimix, just to do the things AUM can do!
