Gadget for Mac is surprisingly cool, and on sale through Sunday (8-26-18) too

edited August 2018 in General App Discussion

After having deleted Gadget off my iPad a while back, blasphemy I know, I thought why would I want it for Mac? Then I saw that it was on sale, and that there was a free version to try, so I gave that version a spin and was drawn in to the point of getting the full version.

From what I can tell it’s the same as iOS, except everything is on screen at once including all 16 bars of the largest pattern size (if you want). Looks good on a 4K screen too. Plus the biggie is you can use the gadgets as AUs in other DAWs. Good stuff for the sale price of $150:

I’ve been playing around with different set ups, and it works nicely with all the MIDI controllers available for iOS, including AUM and StepPolyArp AU and Rozeta (which includes MIDI mapping for Gadget) as a way to get multiple channels going without having to switch apps.

Pleasantly surprised so far, just thought I give a heads up about the sale, which I stumbled on.

  • Another “biggie” is that once you’ve bought it, there’s no further spending on it, as it includes all of the Gadgets.

  • Only drawback is you don’t get the standalones as you do with some of the iOS versions, but they do work as VST’s, which is a bonus.

  • You don't get the full editing on the Wavestation gadget, which isn't so bad, but the M1 is neutered to the point of it basically being a collection of presets. Would be nice if they changed that in an update so that Mac users could get full functionality, or at least more functionality.

The Wavestation is even worse in the vst Korg Collection. The iOS version is streets ahead.

  • Yeah I wouldn’t have bought it at $300. Maybe at $200. At any rate, another small issue is that while they give you the option to play using a qwerty keyboard, you cannot lower the octave and the lowest note is always the second octave. This is a shame because the way they have it set up is better than other DAWs that give you qwerty control, in that the notes are all in one row to match the scale setup on the gadget. Being stuck on that octave range means you miss out on playing the entire loops in Stockholm with a qwerty keyboard, as the loops are mapped to the first octave.

Whatever, small issue, for a unique sketchpad DAW/AU hybrid piece of software. It really does function well as a sketchpad with some solid sounds, that can even create full songs if you want, and being able to see everything on screen at once helps the flow a bit.

  • I'm thinking about this. I'm an LPX user on Mac and have most of the gadgets in Gadget on iOS. I'm wondering how well (and useful) the sample-based AU/VST work for Mac folks. Specifically, I'm curious about Vancouver, Abu Dhabi, and Bilbao.

They appear to work well, as they are the same gadget just in a different DAW. One thing though, I read something about the AUs using a different file system than the gadget in Gadget. I guess you have to transfer the samples to another folder for when using as an AU in another DAW, and vice versa.

I haven’t tried it though so I can’t say for sure.

Scratch that. Just tested this out, and patches carry over. I imported a sample into Vancouver, saved the patch, opened Vancouver in Logic and the sample was there and the patch worked just fine.

  • @e121, thanks for testing that out. EXS24 is a pain, and while I love Alchemy, it's very deep and not always ideal for simple tasks.

  • Gadget definitely has the simplicity angle going for it when compared to Logic, almost to a fault, as a small handful of the gadgets are a bit too simplistic to be all that useful. Overall though, a very nice collection of sound devices and effects to work with, and something is to be said about being two mouse clicks away from drawing in quantized automation across a 16 bar phrase. I can’t stress that enough, how nice it is to have everything in front of you more or less, or at least not too far away.

I would say Gadget Mac is a good buy at 50% off but not at full price for the issues listed above. It’s significantly better on iOS which a boon for We the community. I will say that if you own Maschine mk3, the way it integrates with Gadget desktop is amazing.

Does it? I’m just testing a Mk3, didn’t realise it worked with Gadget...hmmm

  • Promo video for NKS format... Which doesn’t show much...

Ah ok thanks. See it’s picking them up as plugins but sequencing them in Maschine. Be nice if it worked with the standalone Gadget...maybe it does...

  • Hmmm, tested it and it doesn’t pick up the Mk3 via the standalone, and in Maschine vst mode the drum pads (London etc.) can’t be accessed, unless there’s a fiddle.

  • Dead link in first post, but sale is still alive:

    https://korg.shop/korg-gadget-for-mac.html?___store=english

I was trying to find information, and that’s another thing, not the best documentation. Though it’s not like it’s all that compicated, but still, Korg support leaves something to be desired.

I went through all the gadgets and in all I found 20 that I think I’ll use, so that’s under $10 per plug, plus a sequencer and automation thrown in. Not bad, even if yes, some of those 20 gadgets have limitations.

  • Another small tidbit: You can record in to the two audio recording gadgets (Zurich and Rosario) from an iPad by USB. For some reason I thought that was Logic only.

Now, if only there were an easy way to create Rex files, it would make the Stockholm gadget a lot more useful.
