Benchmarking CPU usage/performance of Native versus AU plugins
Now that there are two plugins in Auria Pro that are available as AU and in native format i did some benchmarks to work out the CPU overhead for AU usage versus native plugins.
I used the same base setup as in my AU EQ benchmark, so its 44 audio tracks and 5 subgroups.
.
.
Using the AU format itself does not generate any additional CPU load per instance - the CPU load curves of native and AU plugins are almost identical.
In case of the FabFiler Pro Q2 plugin a constant offset of approx 4% can be observed that is independend of the number of instances.
.
Turnado is load bound, hitting 100% with 32 instances - approaching 90% CPU load, the curve rises steeper.
ProQ2 is memory bound, hitting the AU total memory limit with 77 AU instances - in native format i suspect the 100% CPU bound at about 350-400 ProQ2 plugin instances. If Apple raises the total AU memor limit, more AU instances of several FX plugins will be possible.
My AU EQ benchmark shows that the CPU usage for 77 ProQ2 plugin instances (minus the base for playing the audio tracks) is about the same in Auria Pro (24%) and AUM (23-25%) - so the above curves are probably host independend.
.
For all Turnado instances i use a setting with 8 active effects, one from each category (see screenshot):

AU isn't going away. It's time for us to request "Freeze" functionality in our DAWs.
It has been brought to the attention of the relevant people at Apple, and they have acknowledged that they're looking into alternatives.
Nice one @brambos
