the Effect AUs -which are the bread and butters? which are the esoteric? which are the must-haves?

Hi all. Further to my path of getting stuff done (is it kinkujin, is it?) ... i'm wanting to explore some effects. As per the title, what are the essentials, etc. ? Having nearly none the sky is the limit here. To this point I use only what is included within an app with the exception of RE-1.

I have Cubasis, BM3 and Gadget.

  • Cubasis has the basic channel strip FX and Gadget has FX in each Gadget (I think).

So, I'm guessing you want some esoteric/creative FX. Is that the direction this should go or do you want advice on the best FX in each standard category?

    Reverb?
    Delay?
    Compression?
    EQ?

    or

    Heavy Modulation/Filter/Time Manipulation FX?

Is money a factor in your process? That might lead to FX bundles like Holderness (not AU).

Knowing what I know today after plenty of app-o-holism I'd say Virsyns AudioEffx is one well worth to have in the collection. AudioDamage has two free plug-ins (FuzzPlus 3 and Rough Rider 2) that won't hurt to have in the collection.

I'm sure more recommendations will pop up in this thread.

  • Turnado and Discord are my two most used AU’s.

Well, yes esoteric but also if I'm missing out on anything that is significantly better than what is available in the aformentioned DAWs. Thanks!

  • Thanks all. Keep it coming. Stuff I didn't know about already mentioned.

  • Virsyn Tap Delay

  • How about the ApeSoft AUs?

  • Anthing Audio Damge; excellent sound and well desinged👌🏼

    I like:

    • Waves IAP Packs in Cubasis
    • Holderness Bundle (for Reverb/Delay, Echoes, Stereo, Swoosh, etc)
    • ToneStack IAA (which I bought for guitar/bass but end up grabbing to make specific channel strips/rigs for instruments, mics) currently on sale if you record guitars/bass it's my favorite but I suspect I could use other FX stacks to get similar results. I just haven't tried (yet).
    • FAC Maxima Limiter
    • Harmonizer
    • Limiter (great bargain - also does saturation well)
    • Objeq (intended to model hand percussion but great to turn any impulse into a woody percussion and just general tone morphing)
    • DubFilter
    • Gliderverb

And I'm still shopping as I learn more about modern methods.

My current efforts are around making sampled instruments in AudioLayer which includes the previously mentioned VirSyn eFFx chain (but I don't think you can use those effects when you use AudioLayer in the AU FX mode. That mode exists to allow you to sample the input. Which is great in AUM if you can stand the smaller AU GUI for AudioLayer).

  • Audio damage is awesome.I use Rough rider 2 which I just recently discovered that its free and Pumphouse to ALL my tracks since I got it.
Basically Pumphouse is genius for me since I make techno, its the holy grail for sidechain compression and its really a must have if you are making beats.

  • Ok, just to thank you all and update the thread ...
I got the free stuff that @Samu mentioned.
Also bought Kosmonaut because ... Bram.
    And Virsyn stuff is next.

I LOVE Kosmonaut. So much space-widening deliciousness. Sound goes from teevee to theatrical!

  • People always seem to forget DDMF plugins. Not the most usable UI (at least on an iPhone) compared to some others, but they sound pretty damned good. They have/had a pretty good bundle deal recently, as well. I love FAC Chorus, plus Audio Damage. I'm on an iPhone so my options are more limited.
