Can't send midi to SynthMaster One app from Xequence or Beatmaker3

• In SynthMaster I can only choose:
[ ] Netwerk Session One
[ ] BeatMaker 3
There is no Xequence option...

• In BeatMaker I select Synthmaster One as midi out destination: Synthmaster doesn't receive anything

• In Xequence I select Synthmaster One as midi out destination: Synthmaster doesn't receive anything

Is this possible at all? Should be right?

Comments

  • Do you have AB3? If so, perhaps you can use that to do the MIDI routing--if SM1 has AB3 support

  • If Synthmaster One appears as a MIDI destination in Xequence, but sending notes to it from Xequence doesn't produce any sound, then it must be a wrong setting (or bug) in SM1 (didn't try it myself). If SM1 has a "Background Audio" setting of some sort, make sure it is turned on.

  • I guess the problem is SynthMaster One, background audio is turned on.

The other synths I have receive midi from Xequence without any problem:

    • Poison 202
    • Kauldron
    • iSEM
    • Zeeon

Virtual midi works for SynthMaster One because I am able to send midi from iSEM to SynthMaster One....

Does Synthmaster One work when you play it live from Xequence's internal keyboard?

    @SevenSystems
    no..
neither does it work when playing a midi pattern..

Xequence doesn appear in the input devices' options..
But Xequence doesn't show up in the 'midi in source options' of Poison as well, but it is still receiving midi from Xequence.....

    @kv331audio_bulent
I suspect that Synthmaster can't receive virtiual midi when used standalone.. Strange, all the other synths can...

Yeah it is normal for Xequence not to appear in other apps (as strange as it may seem). Xequence doesn't expose a virtual MIDI source, but instead itself looks for virtual MIDI destinations. This can't be a problem in this case though because SM1 apparently does expose a virtual MIDI destination, but it doesn't seem to be working correctly... I might try this myself later and give some feedback!

  • @SevenSystems

Allright, thanx for the fast reply..

    Just tested midi from:

    • Groove Rider GR16 to Synthmaster One: works.
Groove Rider appears as Input device in Synthmaster One..

    • KRFT to Synthmaster One: doesn't work.
KRFT does appears as Input device in Synthmaster One..

  • Just tried it.
Could not get any Sound from SynthMaster One when triggered from within Xequence.
Xequence is not listed in the MIDI List inside SynthMaster - that seems normal like @SevenSystems mentioned above. Setting SynthMaster ONE as target inside Xequence doesn’t trigger any sounds.

Got it working using AudioBus in the MIDI area.
Xequence then sends to AudioBus. AudioBus send MIDI from Xequence to SynthMAster One.

    That worked right away.
    Hope that helps.

  • @MrBlaschke
Okay thanks for testing.. Well, AudioBus seems the solution for me then...

  • If you have it, yes
I guess if you don‘t that AUM does the same job - can test if needed.

    please if you can...

I don't know the difference between AudioBus and AUM. They seem similar apps from what I've read so far.... I don't have either of them yet..

I just want to load a project containing:

    • Xequence sequencing Gadget and other AUv3 synths or IAA synths... (with the correct presets)
    • I want to record everything as a mix
  • edited September 2018

Confirmed as working using „AUM“ as target in Xequence and setting „AUM Destination“ as Source of an auV3 Instance of SynthMaster One inside AUM.
    No special fancy mapping’s required.

So you can go with either version.

Sooner or later i would recommend getting both.

Recommend this video from Mitch ( @gmslayton ) speaking about the differences AUM/Audiobus. Very helpful if you need to make decisions.

  • Thanx

    you mean this video

  • Yes. Sorry, forgot the link. It‘s still in my clipboard. Shame on me ;)

Well I've watched the video... but I still I don't get how you can use 1 sequencer app (in an input slot?) sending midi to multiple apps... I assume that I can use 1 Xequence project sending midi from each track to a different desitination app..

Can any of you show me in a video how a setup in AudioBus (or AUM) with Xequence sending midi to a couple of apps (Korg Gadget + some some other synths) works?

  • Have you tried midimittr, to check routing.

    • Variant A (Audiobus) : Just insert Xequence into multiple Input slots on the MIDI Page, selecting a different MIDI Out Port each time. Then in Xequence, create an instrument for each lane, set its MIDI destination to "Audiobus" and the corresponding Audiobus MIDI Out.
    • Variant B (AUM) : Just run both Xequence and AUM "normally" (as normal standalone apps), insert multiple apps into multiple channels in AUM, enable "AUM Destination" and one of the 16 channels for each of them in the channel menu, and then in Xequence create an instrument for each AUM channel, set the MIDI destination to "AUM" and the corresponding channel.

There's lots of other ways to do it, but these are the easiest.

I’ve just bought the app, so here’s what I’ve done:

Loaded AUM into a channel on AudioBus3 -

    Then
load Xequence onto a midi channel in AB3 pointing to AUM.

Hopefully the rest of the pics will explain the other steps

My first time with Xequence, so I’m learning it too :)

  • @Fruitbat1919 thanks for posting the images! Note that inserting AUM into the output slot of the Xequence MIDI lane in AB shouldn't be necessary (as Xequence sends directly to AUM via CoreMIDI in your example, not via Audiobus), but it probably doesn't hurt either.

Do I even need the Xequence in the midi slot then beyond it being useful for the AB3 switching tabs?

I did see a post you had made regarding setup with AUM and AB3, but for the life of me I can’t find it now - any chance you could post the link here if you know where it is?

I’m confused (or stupid) about why there’s a problem sequencing SynthMaster One vía BeatMaker 3.
SynthMaster One is AUv3. BM3 is a AUv3 host. No midi to set up. I’m sure I’m misunderstanding the question

You're right, in your example, Xequence is only in the MIDI slot so that AB knows about it and you can use the conveniences it brings (Sidebar, Transport sync, state saving, etc.). I know what post you mean, and what you've posted is identical, minus the "AUM in the Xequence MIDI lane as output" part. (as I said, that isn't necessary, but it doesn't hurt either).

SynthMaster One is AU however so it can be sequenced through Xequence into AUM for example until a fix is ready

Looks like @SevenSystems and @Fruitbat1919 stole my idea or vice versa

  • edited September 2018

Got AudioBus and Xequence is sending midi to all my synths and Korg Gadget. Also, I can switch apps the easy way now... Everything is routed to AudioShare and I can record everything..

Thanx guys! I'm a happy man!
