iPad and PC combo - how do you do it?

Any recommendations for using an iPad in tandem with a PC DAW? Anything you can't live without (besides the audio interface and monitors obv)?

  • I've tried to route iPad audio via software (studiomux, etc) to my Win 10 box ..but for me, ended up too unpredictable - app crashing / audio crackling too often last I tried. Some have reported better results.

After that, I went with an iConnectMidi4++ hardware solution, which works a LOT better, though I still had occasional crackling with it.

Haven't really paired iOS with my PC much lately though, mostly just going with the built in pairing ability with my Macbook Pro, which I've found to be more reliable than either of those solutions on PC. It's as simple as enabling iPad as an audio device in Mac OS settings, works like a charm w/ Logic and Reason. Planning to eventually get a 2nd interface with optical out, and just route the audio back into Windows machine via my Motu. Already have the option to do it with coaxial toslink, though I haven't tried it yet.

Other than all that, I use dropbox a LOT (paid for the 1TB tier) to swap project files between all 3 systems.

I use my Ica4+ and AUM to send audio to ableton. No crackles at all and it's lovely to have 2 model15s working in ableton :) sometimes like to use multiple ripplemakers as well...

  • What I can't live without:

    • A class-compliant 8-channel Audio and Midi interface for the iPad (with CCK3)
    • iOS apps with sample import and tight Midi clock sync support
    • File exchange without requiring Internet access.
    • Gadget, Lemur, Zeeon
I stopped using the unreliable and slow Dropbox completely.
Most of you guys must have gigabit internet connections from heaven ... I don't and I much prefer (wireless) iTunes file sharing using iTunes on the DAW host.

Actually I'm rarely using both in tandem because I already have a few great synths on the desktop, and the iPad is mainly the sketchpad for ideas and first steps in compositions.
Gadget works well enough with Live, so the handover is fairly easy.

@JoshuaRex you have studiomux which is a bit complex to set up but does work and also the audio through device iconnectaudio4+ or midi device that does audio through streaming also iconnectmidi4+. I’m not sure of other methods.

  • My workflow is quite simple.
Producing mostly in BlocsWave => Ableton export => finishing in Ableton.
When I work with Garageband I need to export track by track into audio(share) and the lighning pendrive or AudioShare wifi spot.
Wondering to buy an old mac (2011) just for garageband into logic pro export and Ableton live/traktor gigging.

    That’s it.
