I know there are seperate threads about (free) VST plugins, but this site has a huge collection and is still updated. Website is German but this should be no problem for people that want to use or download free VST plugins.

Enjoy

  • I still prefer KVR ;)

  • Blimey, thanks for this.

  • There is also vst planet.. which must surly be a contender

    http://www.vstplanet.com

  • I'd also recommend
    http://vst4free.com/
because you can filter by type and platform and for many older VST(i) it's the only place that actually mirrors the files.
KVR still lists dead links for too many VST(i).

What a disgusting site, they have taken the KVR developer challenge plugins released yesterday, uploaded zips to them to their own site, not even mentioned that they are developer challenge and are for people to vote for in the yearly competition for developers to win user donated prizes, thereby completely bypassing the developers intent for those plugins.
Leeching horrible sites like this should be shutdown, it is one step down from cracked software.

Did you dig deeper and click on the [mehr lesen] ( in Englsh = more info) links. There you see that they link also to the original content for download.
Example (page with a link to KVR) = http://forum.music-society.de/showthread.php?tid=5857

The problem with (free) VSTs is that a lot of them going lost over time because original devs loose interest and stop their websites. Repositories like this site, but also sited mentioned by others above are a great resource for this abandoned pieces of software. BTW there's also a lot of those abandoned VST downloadable through the internet archive (archive.org).

    That's the point!

So they also host the plugins ? That’s great :)

  • Unless they have permission, it is also illegal

Of course in some cases some freeware devs distribute there software with tight licenses. And in that case you're right. But most of the freeware comes without or not so tight licenses. In my eyes freeware is made in the first place for sharing. As long as the dev gets mentioned and people/ websites offer it for free and don't see any harm. The more an application gets linked and distributed it's more free attention for the dev. And as I already said, devs carreers, abandon their websites. People even die, and with them often their websites die. A good example for is the late HG Fortune that made some great freeware VSTs. WIth his dead all his VSTs looked to be lost. Some repositories picked them up though. And his name became even more famous. He now even has become a hero for some people. His memory lives. Think your way of thinking about freeware is way to rigid.
