Stereo Width AUv3?

Hi! Is there an AUv3 effect that will adjust stereo width similar to how the Cubasis effect pack 1 tool or Audio Mastering does it? I know you can do a bit of adjustment in AUM but that doesn't seem as effective somehow.

On that topic, I've been using that effect on just about every track since I discovered it to make things sound bigger. Is that advisable and commonplace or am I more likely harming the overall sound quality of my tracks somehow?

Thanks!

  • Thank you! Good dev but pretty bad reviews. Any experience with it?

  • Ha, I own that one...maybe I need to learn how to use it.

I love stereo widening. Haaze is nice as is the one in BM3.

I have been told if you are concerned about how your mixes translate to mono (ala how they sound in a dance club) that using them can cause phase issue and to be sure to test your mix in mono. Its not my thing but I am sure others can shine more light on this.

  • Well, that is enough--I'll give Haaze a go! Looks clever...or Klevgr? Thanks to you both and for the tip regarding mono, @AudioGus !

I use that all the time too, especially in Ableton and AUM. Widening pads, arps or percs, narrowing basses is so useful. Have tried Blue mangoo Stereo modulator but that’s not its purpose, nor it’s directionalEQ’s one (super efficient to lower/raise some frequencies in stereo field but it’s not a widener). Have to try Haaze. Please let me know if it does the job well.

Definitely is a concern BUT this is mainly an issue in low frequencies. Thing to do on your master or key busses is mono everything below somewhere, depends on mix. I might do anywhere from 100 to 300hz. Not sure of an iOS app to do that but it is not hard to do on desktop. E.g. on Windows the free Basslane vst

zMors EQ Has a great widener its the “delay” button - it delays the audio Left or Right by sample amounts plus you get a mid/side eq if you need to adjust frequencies

You can do nifty r/l stuff with ProQ2 as well.

    Doesn't AUM have built-in Mid/Side processing?

Oooh, tell me more as I have that and use it everywhere!

Yes and it works perfectly, I use it all the time. But I need an AU equivalent too for GB and apeMatrix.

  • M/S Processor by Ruben Nine is not AU but at least it supports IAA and Audiobus...

  • Just buyed Haaze and it’s a nice tool, much more musical than Stereo Modulator and nice to control the way a track fit in the mix. But I think it’s not as efficient as AUM’s node to get a truly narrower image, even if it’s very good at widening things.

  • theres a haas (haaze) effect in Kosmonaut as well. for stereo width i normally use Haaze though. very straightforward, no bells/whistles to distract.

im constantly impressed with what proq2 is capable of. i use it constantly and i am still learning new stuff.

  • ...but that will all have to wait for future tutorials, as I'm out of time in this one.

    Always such a pleasing presentation.
