I love to listen to Marc Maron interview stand-ups and try to understand the personality type that pursues comedy for a career. It appears there are a few traits but they are still an interesting bunch.
How did you put your act together?
Writing it out and memorizing bits or doing mic time and riff'ing to find ideas that went over?
Doing it really well is so hard and I think it requires a special kind of intelligence combined with a good work ethic to go through the "bad nights" before you can get it right. And the opportunities to "fail" are miles and days apart so that doesn't help.
I was killing at the Beauty Parlor yesterday. You can build slowly in that setting and just throw out ideas when there's something to react to. My wife wanted me to get a foot massage and that situation was just ripe (like my feet) with possibilities. All women in the shop and me doing self deprecating jabs at myself. Like shooting fish in a barrel. But put me in front of a doubting crowd and I'm sure I'd crash on the rocks. I'm a counter puncher. Someone has to swing first for me to land something.
I admire those that take the risk but also wonder where the motivation comes from. Generally, it's a desire to be admired of course. Everyone loves a good funny person. That's the only way I got married I think. By making her laugh.
@McDtracy : I started when I was chatting up some babe in a bar in LA and her telling me I should doncomedy and that she knew the owner of the Laugh Factory in LA (whom I later did an unfinished documentary with . I told her I didn’t do stand up but she said all I needed to do was to come up w three minutes . That’s how it started . The motivation comes from trying to acutualize and hopefully mesmerize some earlier predelictation for class clownedness .
I sent you a private message couple days ago ... did you get it ?
Number 1 Reason to Do Comedy: impress the opposite sex (or the same sex as the case may be). Actually, it's the #1 Reason to do almost anything for most of us. Comedy is sometimes the only shot left for many.
I think I gravitated towards comedy to get my mother's attention at a young age so it gets tied to seeking love in general. Just as good grades, success with sports, etc do as well.
Approval from others.
It's also a great self-defense mechanism to avoid getting bullied.
Of course, you can also pervert it into the method you might use to bully others.
It's powerful.
