New Yamaha Keyboard - MODX6/7/8

Same sounds as the Montage for around half the price. Ironically, this works out not far off the price of a new top end iPhone! I know which I would prefer for making music. Oh and it includes a built-in audio interface which I have seen described as IOS compatible.

  • Yeah like the look of that :)

Yeah, the more I look into the MODX6, the more interesting it looks. And only 14lbs. Some ideas I'd love to try involving it and IOS:

    • Gestrument Pro driving MODX
    • MODX motion sequencer synced to Patterning 2 audio (Audio Beat Sync feature)
    • MODX envelope follower using Sector audio as modulation source
    • MODX multichannel audio processed by iDensity
    • Sunvox sequencing MODX

Just some ideas off the top of my head - I'm sure there are peeps here who are more creative, but it's not a contest, lol. FM-X is the star of MODX and rightly so, but the AWM2 side ain't bad - you can layer multiple AWM2 synths, and each synth has 9 LFOs, choice of 18 different filter types, etc.

  • @PhilW : Yeah and the speakers on that 6.5 iPhone.. There’s a lot to be done in that . I’d go for the iPhone too.

  • I use my iPad Pro for making music but I never used my iPhone, screen too small for me, and I’m not out and about with wasted commute time or anything. So the last phone upgrade I had, I went for a mid range Samsung, saved lots of money and been very happy with it. I particularly liked that I could add cheap storage to have all my music collection with me, something I couldn’t do on my old iPhone.

  • I prefer my iPad Pro over my iPhone for music making too. I''d be bringing the iPad with me more often if I still had my old job which indeed involved a longer commute. I've learned though to use certain apps if inspiration strikes when all I have is my iPhone.

Now regarding a $1000+ newer iPhone vs. $1300 Yamaha MODX6 - that's an easy choice for me. But we're all different.

First demo I've seen that shows an iPad B)

Also the first demo to show the audio input functions in action - syncing the arpeggiator and delay to audio coming from the iPad, as well as using the envelope follower for side-chaining type of stuff and other modulation.
