Integrated sampling & re-sampling would have been the icing on the cake but it's a no can do. Not even on the Montage which is kind strange considering it's considered to be the 'flagship' of the Yamaha Pro Synth range.
The sad conclusion is that sampling is not considered to be an important feature on 'modern' Synths and the focus is rather on selling more sound libraries. I for one love sampling stuff what ever it may be![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Paulo from Synth Mania is just crazy when it comes to sampling.

W-30 and a Stylophone Gen X-1
I may even end up getting a Volca Bass just for sampler fodder in addition to the UNO Synth![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Sure, I understand simple playback of samples is not enough for some users. If I get a MODX I'd connect it to an iPad anyway, and it's got iDensity, Egoist, etc for all my sampling work. The MODX's sample playback would be just a convenience feature to me. I'm sure the USB interface will allow me to pipe audio back and forth between MODX and iPad as I please for resampling or whatever I want.
I've met Paulo - he's a cool dude.
Yeah, but it would be a pita to transfer the samples from the iPad to MODX without via a computer since Apple hasn't implemented standard mass-storage support on iOS![:( :(](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/frowning.png)
(If there was mass storage support it would be just a matter of using the Files.app and dropping the files directly to the MODX since it does act as a standard USB Mass Storage device like most Yamaha and other Synths do).
Audio can be 'piped' back and forth but since there's no 'sampling' nor 'mass storage support' on iOS a computer would still be needed for the transfer of the samples![:( :(](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/frowning.png)
I enjoy his videos![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
I'm used to the non-ideal methods of audio file transfer between IOS devices and hardware - particularly having to use a computer to facilitate the transfers.
It's not enough to make me give up on IOS though. That is why I keep saying I don't need MODX to be standalone - I want to use it as a partner to my iPad. The 61-key version is only 14 lbs btw - great for gigging. Looks like there's enough space on the right side to park my iPad.
That's enough for me. Send MODX audio (mostly FM-X synth audio
) into AUM or ApeMatrix, hosting a processing/realtime sampling app. Or simply record MODX audio into some IOS multitrack recorder app. Send prepared speech samples from IOS Receive IOS audio for MODX's sidechaining function, or to sync MODX motion sequencer - assuming the beat detection is at least as good as the Octatrack's (which actually isn't the best, so that's not an unreasonable bar to beat).
Cool! The audio-interface part of it is indeed interesting since the MODX is able to pipe external audio-in thru the USB which can not be done on the cheaper MX-Line.
The MX would've been a good 'audio interface' if the external audio was converted and piped thru USB to the host for easy recording of external sources.
The FM-X synth engine is 'crazy'![:D :D](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/lol.png)
I, for one, am delighted to see 76-key-range getting some love finally. Roland also announced a new affordable 76-key model last week. Of course, you don’t get the FM synth, but it’s $600 less than the Yamaha MODX7.

@Samu: Are you sure the Mx49 can’t do that? The specs say it can
@Samu : The Mx 49 ...It DOES do it.. Bi directional usb audio/Midihttps://usa.yamaha.com/products/music_production/synthesizers/mx_series/features.html#product-tabs

I could not make it work in the Store...
It is easy to record the internal sounds over USB and play back the iPad output thru the MX outputs but the Aux input on the MX doesn't get passed-thru USB back to the iPad?!(Ie. the AUX input has no AD converter to 'sample' the input, it's just mixed with the output).
Are you sure you were playing the mx version ll? Because the original model was not class compliant

Yes, MX49 V2, the same keyboard in the store where I unlocked my copy FM Essentials.app long time ago...
@thesoundtestroom apparently got an MX49 V2 so if it's possible to record audio to the iPad from the MX's AUX-Input using the USB connection I think it's time for a video![;) ;)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
I thought the auxiliary input was only routed to the stereo output on the MX series?
It is! That's why I got 'puzzled' because if it was indeed possible to 'record' the AUX-In thru USB to an iPad the MX49 would already be sitting on my desk instead of the Steinberg UR-242.
When we called the Yamaha rep from the store they told use that there's no AD converter on the AUX-In on the MX and it's analog mixing with the other output so it's impossible to route it to the USB port for recording.
(I'll see if I can find the schematics of the MX49 V2 that shows this).

@Samu :I kinda know a rep.. I messaged him the info.. let’s see if he answers
@Samu
Thanks for clarrifying.
@Samu : This is from the rep after I copied and pasted your experience in the store w the mx 49
“That is correct. The AUX in is just that: An AUX input. And A/D input (like on MODX) will pass audio through to USB, but and AUX in is just that: An Auxiliary input.”
Thanks!![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
I thought I was going crazy trying to get it to work in the store, that's why we called the rep
When I bump into things I'm unsure of while reading the manuals to new gear I visit the local stores for a check.
My interest in the MX line started when Yamaha launched the FMEssentials app that needed an unlock.
The only remaining keyboard of the MX line the store has left is the MX88 which can also be used to unlock the app.
Once that is gone, it will be very hard to activate the FM Essentials app without actually owning a keyboard.
Yamaha has no intention to add an IAP option to FM Essentials which is kinda sad...
I have hinted to Yamaha to make a combined AUv3 Synth.app for iOS containing both the AN2015 synth engine from the Yamaha Synthbook(it's AudioBus and IAA compatible) and the FM Essentials app into one with maybe an added AWM2/XG sound sound module and sell it at a reasonable iOS premium price to compete with Korg on iOS![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
(I only got a mail reply stating that it would be evaluated, but since then silence).
I will be checking out the MODX when it shows up at the local shop...
@Samu: Wasn’t there a six operator FM app that came out soon after FM essentials that was better?
KQ Dixie is 6OP FM with DX7 patch compatibility. What makes the FM Essentials app 'special' to me is it's super accurate emulation of the DX100 & TX81z(It's full emulation at DAC level) with 2 built-in effects added as a bonus.
FM Essentials is closer to the ReFace DX as it also includes optional feedback on all of the operators, something that's not possible on the original 4OP FM synths.
The only drawback of FM Essentials app is that all the AUv3 instances share the same preset which I consider to be a buggy implementation. I've not received any further response from Yamaha on that issue...
am i correct in saying you need to plug the app into a yamaha mx at least once to be able to get functionally?
Yes, one connection to a MX V2 is enough to permanently (or at least until next re-install of the app) unlock the app.
This is why I'm worried if I need to do a factory restore if my iPad I would loose the unlocked FM Essentials![:( :(](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/frowning.png)
(The 'unlock information' is not included in a device backup, that I have already checked with my iPhone).
