Courante (Partita n. 1 in Bm, BWV 1002) - guitar transcription from the original violin score!
Here is my rendition on the guitar of the "Courante", the third movement of the partita n. 1 for violin in Bm, BWV 1002, by Johann Sebastian Bach, arguably the father of all western music.
As I always do when playing this partita, I played the second section of the song just once, instead of doing the ritornello indicated in the score, inspired by the great virtuoso of the violin, Arthur Grumiaux. Other than that, it’s a rather faithful transcription of the courante directly from the violin partita, so bear in mind that this one sounds different from the well known renditions by the likes of Andres Segovia, John Williams or David Russell, which are of course also excellent.
Worth noting that there were two kinds of courante in the barroque period: the French and the Italian. The French courante, like the other French court dances, had a slow tempo, and the Italian courante was a quite faster.
Enjoy, and have a great week!
