"Reason" vs. Groovebox: ENDGAME or JUST GAMES?

So, I don't know for certain the fate of either app.

Let me ponder this a moment.

What if Reason as it now exists merely morphs into Groovebox 2.0.? Hummm. What if? Would you just turn away?

I think it is safe to say they are of the same template at this point. For instance, GUI. No brainer.

The roll out and first update of performance aspects of the app.

Sort of like you know, ACURA and HONDA, TOYOTA and LEXUX.

Problem is, feels like the upgrades are more like expected factory features, not luxury items or "upgrades" for each app.

What is the point of these apps?

I don't see how Novation expects Groovebox to sell more gear since the midi limitations of Groovebox IOS make it nearly impossible to use my multiple Novation midi devices at once with any sort of workflow.

What is next for the so called "Reason" app? Will the next big "upgrade" everyone wets their drawers over be nothing more than another Groovebox look alike? Or more?

What is the point of the Reason app? I think it is safe to say that it is to sell Reason itself.

As far as business models for music companies and iOS app under that umbrella, I think it is safe to say sometimes the most talented programmers, music minds, and overall gear production specialists do NOT always have the best grip on marketing, research, and business development.

Novations flaccid iOS app to gear conversion model is not a grower.

Reason "compact" was compact indeed. I have never seen such a huge bone chiller killer as the actual app once many people dug in. And I won't argue this. The reviews in the store sum it up.

So, what is next for Reason compact?

Is the Novation app market share and movement complete?

Or, are these apps nothing more then to nickel and dime users into a preset IAP de facto subscription model?

I hope REASON can turn the less than fabulous launch around. I want better ways to make music.

More so, I would love to see Novation finally make FEW last changes to their apps to make them the true leaders for iOS app and midi integration into the perfect set up.

We shall see.

It would be nice to see Novation and Proplheadd. actually do some real market research through a proper questionnaire and do the numbers of what people want.

Or if their are discussions, have more technical based and specific content discussed individually per forum or thread. Or even the endless ways of online meeting and chats for people to work on things. Slack anyone.

Something more helpful than an online popularity contest where unless you luv luv luv the ideas and people, you are shut down for not worshiping at the alter of "yes yes please and thank you for gracing our presence".

Peace and Love

  • Agree. But I think that Novation and Proplheadd see the iOS market simple as a simple cashcow. The apps are free but only aimed at IAP. Besides that it's just marketing thing to sell the more expensive (pro) hard and software. The real creativity comes from indie devs that opened up iOS is a more serious platform. And give much credits the @Michael and AudioBus because without this we for certain never would have al this nice and more open possibilities.

As I see it it’s a way of getting younger demographics introduced to the brand. For people like me, seeing Reason in all its glory and then seeing Reason Compact is very disappointing but perhaps if I was like a 15 year old kid who stumbled on a free app like Reason Compact that gave me a key to Reason Light that I had no prior exposure I would be totally thrilled about it.

The problem I see however for all these big name PC based software companies is that yes they will always cater to professionals, particularly in the gaming and cinematic soundtrack industry, average consumers will migrate further away from PCs as they don’t offer the same value they once did in the wake of affordable iPads that offer so much more in terms of quality and reliability of software. Crashes are a routine phenomena for any windows user no matter what, wereas I can count the number of IOS crashes I’ve had in 3 years with only one hand. Sure some apps will crash but that’s altogether separate.

TLDR Novation aka Ampify provides a cool 3 piece suite for its Launchpad app and software combo and for each app there’s a store offering sounds and other inlockable features.

Reason Compact I suspect is a quick cash grab, 10 bucks for the synth, from people like us, but intended primarily marketing ploy for new consumers, just as FL Studio, IMaschine, etc.are.

    Very true!

    Good point my friend.

  • Audiobus would be the ONLY music app I would pay a subscription for and I would do it gladly, just so it would show up in the top sellers list on the App Store.

  • Reason Compact is a perfectly fine (and incredibly young) app that has a great synth engine. I’ve found the sequencer useful for sketching ideas and love the Auxy style of it, I mainly sequence in BM3 and hate how fiddle the sequencer is, zooming in and out, trying to tap minuscule boxes, Auxy and RC have it right but in its current state it’s not useful for actual production.
People have some ridiculous expectations because it’s called Reason Compact, but even if they left it as it is now I’d feel I got my money’s worth, Europa sounds very good.
I would love to see it grow into something more serious and feature rich, but for now I’m completely happy using it as just a synth and the developers have been very responsive to feature requests. The midi update came quickly and saving presets are on the way. Should they have been included from the start? Yes in my opinion but you didn’t have to buy the app to realize this so there’s no reason to complain.

Did not say Reason was not "fine".

Please state peoples' ridiculous expectations you speak of with links.

Where is someone complaining about the actual app as it is?

The basis for the thread for forward looking in a dual comparison of two major crossover companies in their attempts to straddle the line between iOS and their existing market shares of offered goods and services.

    Thanks for your input.

Lol, looks like you guys gave Michael an idea??

  • Apart from korg, I have zero expectations from the likes of novation and propellor heads

Groovebox and blocs are simply great for making quick loops to add to gadget in Bilbao or Abu Dhabi and I don’t expect them to do anything further to these apps

Best we stick to the indie devs who are progressive methinks

Audiobus is the total bees knees, especially the updates. But even AB gets a no on subscriptions.

Actually, let me expand so it doesn't sound snarky. The new updates have revolutionized my workflow. It is so profoundly easy and solid. Nothing ever goes wrong in it. It is truly the only indispensable app. Except for, OBVS, Bebot.

  • I think developers need to consider iOS/tablets the ‘new computer’ and get onboard before they are replaced...but then again that is the natural way of things I guess. If you think that laptops are slated to outstay the tablet...i’d Be willing to bet against it.

Another thing people are not talking about is the chip issues that all computer manufacturers went through recently, the very thing that has Apple investing in making their own new processors with ARM. It’s this very subject that signals to me...the end of the personal computer (desktop&laptop) and the emergence of very personal mobile ultraportable tablets and phones.

Once the iPad is matched with desktop/laptop power (and it will be) all the bulky stuff is out for me.
tablets have changed the way I do music forever.

...and one day something will replace those as well... ;)
