App to transcribe vocals to midi?

I’m just getting into songwriting and I don’t know what notes I’m singing, and I’m not that great of a singer to begin with.

What I would like is the ability to sing the melody in my head and have an app sort of auto-tune the best guess to a piano roll. From there it would be trivial to play with the melody to get it perfect, and then use that midi sequence to practice.

An iOS app would be ideal, but something for Mac or PC would work too. I doubt this exists, but if it does I’ll be a happy man.

  • Have a look at scorecloud, there’s a free iOS app which is pretty limited and a subscription service on pc that has a lot more bells and whistles.

Why not just use ThumbJam? If all you need is a MIDI sequence, you can sing a melody in and it will record the MIDI. You can export the sequence and edit in any iOS DAW.

Thumbjam works well with vocals, I mean you can't just sing a lyric line and expect it to transcribe to MIDI but if you sing clear "la" notes it can do a decent job and also "auto-tune" it to a specific key and scale.

    You are welcome, mate!

  • ThumbJam! +1

Thumbjam is a good all-in-one solution because it records the MIDI internally. Just so you know there are other audio to MIDI converters that would do it. You would just need to set up the MIDI routing to your DAW to record the output as a MIDI sequence.

    • MIDImorphosis
    • MIDI Guitar 2
  • Try Thumbjam. It will even output MPE from it, but that isn’t what you want if you want it to auto tune the MIDI pitch.

  • Thanks for the answers guys, I have ThumbJam, but didn't realize it had this feature (it really is an amazing app). So I'll start there and work my way through other suggestions if it doesn't work for me.> @Hmtx said:

The only issue here is singing the clear "la" notes. I've taken some lessons, but my vocals are not very good. That's why I want to get them into a midi format to play with. But I'm excited to know TJ supports this, thank you.

yeah, enjoy it. Just play around with it in Thumbjam. It doesn't need fancy vocal training, my point was that it might not hear the notes if you are actually singing words "we are the champions my friend" (or whatever)
So you'll just want to use a loud strong voice without words.
