It was one of those things that was nearly good, but didn’t quite make it.
That lousy UI will kill any amount of features. How will it ever become great?
Good is when an app nails at least the UX part even if the UI is mediocre (eg: ThumbJam)
UI is like marketing or a homepage of a website or thumbnail of a YouTube video - it's the first thing a user sees about an app that conveys why it is better, how it will meet their needs and solve their problems and why they should go for it and tempts them to click/download/buy as we know it. Why would they build a great app and make all their efforts go waste with a UI that doesn't impress? Most devs don't possess UI design skills - that's a given - they need a specialist. It is reasonable and justifiable to allocate 66% (or more) of the budget towards marketing of any initiative.
At least, Hollywood Accounting makes more sense:
