iOS files app
So some apps seem to store their stuff in iCloud, whilst others store them in the ‘on my iphone’ Or ‘on my ipad’ folder (eg Audio Evolution). Does anyone know if you can choose which one it uses? It’d be great to be able to start something on iPhone then go to iPad and it to automatically be there to carry on with.

Some but not all apps options to choose where they keep their documents.
Those settings can be found either in the app or under Settings for each app, it's called 'Document Storage' where you have to option to select 'On My iPad' or any storage provider including iCloud, Google Drive, Drop Box etc.
Please do note that only iCloud seems to be somewhat reliable option for actually working with files.
Personally I prefer to keep my stuff on the device and when I need them on another device I Airdrop the files I need.
This is becoming a pivotal aspect for me, now. I’m ceasing using electronic music apps that I can’t just down tools on one iOS device and pick up exactly where I left off on the other iOS device. Anything that can’t do that is out of the running as far as I’m concerned, and, anyway, that’s proving a good way of winnowing down the excess of apps.
Thanks. Can this be done in audio evolution @dwrae ?
It’d be good to be able to store in iCloud rather than ‘on my iphone’
You cannot record in real-time to a cloud, so all files are always stored on your iDevice. Backing up or syncing to iCloud is something you can probably do manually. We would have supported iCloud directly using our 'Cloud sync' feature which supports Dropbox and Google Drive, weren't it for the fact that Apple of course needed to do things differently and does not support a folder structure.
I see. I think if you could set the files location to iCloud it would take care of the syncing bit? Not real-time recording of course but as soon as the wav is written it would sync the file would it not?
I really don't want to go in that direction since I foresee lots of issues. Syncing to a cloud should be a separate user-initiated action.
I guess either location you can just long press and Duplicate the saved file to the other location. GarageBand works with both locations, so you can keep local versions on your device, or save them to cloud where they will update the projects across all your devices: https://support.apple.com/kb/PH24859?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Fair enough, no big deal. I have google drive and Dropbox, and as @Aud_iOS says you can easily dupe to iCloud. Just need to remember to do it when I’m on my iPad.
Hopefully in the future we can look at how GarageBand manages it.
Not sure - the GB files are stored as some sort of project file that can only be read by certain apps (other instances of GB on different devices / and a few other approved apps) - so you can’t duplicate GB projects to Google drive / other cloud services, only from On My iPad to iCloud vice versa.
I keep getting this error acccessing Files. It shows the files for a second and then errors out. I tried updating to the latest iOS 12 update but it hasn’t fixed it.
FIXED!
I needed to free up some storage on my iPad. I had 2 GBs but that wasn’t enough for Files to work apparently.
is there a way to check the size of folders in Files app? When you long press and select Info the size just shows as - -
