Backup iPad that is bigger than your C:\ drive (Windows)

iTunes still doesn't give you the option to change the backup directory???? That is crazy! (Bite lip...don't rant...)

So my iPad is bigger than my SSD C:\ drive so I want to back up to another drive. Trying to spoof iTunes with the mklink command doesn't work because iTunes doesn't like that the target drive is much bigger than C: or something.

So. Is iMazing the best choice? My iPad is 256GB so iCloud is too expensive. Does iFunbox still work with iOS12?

Thx!

  • There was this hack to use “symbolic links” (I think thats the term off the top of my head) that I think worked. You’d trick itunes into thinking the library was somewhere else. Maybe that could work for you...
I’m not paying for itunes, either...
Ifunbox doesn’t access the file system anymore, since like ios9 or something. Shame itunes is such crap...
I still use it only because it lets me transfer all my voicememos in one go (again shame i-effing-tunes)

Using mklink works on my side:

On my PC i changed the iTunes Library to M:/iTunes and for the Backup i used mklink to link c:/user/xxxxxx/AppData/yyyyy/iTunes/Backup to M:/iTunes/Backup

I think yyyy was "Roaming". My C: is 256GB and the M: drive is 2 TB

Maybe I got the syntax wrong. Thank you!

  • I realize now mklink is what I was talking about, sorry for the noise... It worked for me but it has been a few years since I needed it. I don’t backup anymore and manage everything by hand, backing what I deem worthy on a file by file basis

    Thanks for your input.

  • Not much worthy but thanks for thanking;)

  • I just specify the drive/folder in ITunes to back up to as my main drive is full.

  • @Nu2moro on windows? I thought there wasn’t such option but I avoid itunes like the plague so I prolly missed it

  • @pedro, yes on windows 10. It’s the only thing I use ITunes for so not aware of other users problems they have with it.

  • To much hassle I just use the cloud now.
