Not my thing but I like the idea of including sounds. If it had a real MIDI port I reckon it'd be a fun addition to a little volca style set up.
Beat me to it. Was about to post this.
Sounds kinda meh...alright. Very much tabletop definition. Small memory and cpu cheap for sure. Better than nothing I guess but if I want something portable with built in sounds I have Circuit.
Basic GM sounds
I was hoping Akai had gotten ambitious/creative and implemented their Miniak synth engine inside of this controller
Regarding the weight and size difference, check the mass specifications via B&H or Amazon. The MiniLab isn't that heavier at all. If anything it's a better weight. It has a thin sheet of aluminium as the base compared to Akai's all plastic.
Also, MOST important, I'd recommend you go into a store and get a feel of these joints before buying. The MPK's keys were waaaaaaaaaaaaay too tiny for me so I never bought it. Yeah, it makes it small and portable but actually playing the keys may be impractical and a nuisance. I had the APCKey25 which has the same key-bed and they are total trash in comparison to... any other manufacturer. The Akai's keys are springy and hard to press and, again, way too small for me.
Totally un-true. The MiniLab mk2 literally has a factory made preset for Live (Shift + Pad 8). You can launch + scroll through scenes etc. Never really used it because I already had the APC. You can also easily make custom mappings.
Again, go into a store and test them. But in my experience of ultra-portable joints, Akai seems nice but keys are trash and too toy-ish, Novation has really solid knobs (OMG quality) but miss a few things I need, and Arturia is literally the best all-rounder, with all the knobs, pitch and mod, velocity pads, wicked-ass software... but dicey quality-control specifically with the MiniLab2 line
You guys ready to be TOTALLY underwhelmed?
I guess on the bright side, I just saved $129.
those were the days when things were named Soundblaster![;) ;)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
Some of the these tones made it to top40, though (after mangling)
Dr Sbaitso for the vocals, lol.
