So, basically just more in-app purchases again. I guess it’s a smart way to get subscription payments without the users realizing.
Yeah unfortunately it’s just a soundpack IAP for one of the modules. Nothing exciting here for me anyway. Not sure what the bug fixes and improvements are yet. I don’t consider IAPs as subscription since they’re optional.
They are options that are constantly nagging you to purchase them whenever you’re in the new instrument screen. You have all of them on your device, but you want to pay to unlock each one. Instead of being subscription based, they are constantly profiting on our gear envy.
That’s not quite true. You do have to download them, so they’re not already on your device.
The part about gear envy... can’t argue there
If they were nagging us, there would be an annoying pop-up screen there that you’d have to close out in order to view the gadget list. So I don’t see any problem with them showing what I haven’t bought on the list, the way it’s set up. All of the gadgets I haven’t purchased including Module are all at the bottom of the list, so it’s even less intrusive than you make it out to be. I cant agree with you about them profiting on our gear envy either. If they provide an in-app purchase that I feel I can use, I buy it and use it. It’s not like they’re charging several hundred dollars in line with the price of their hardware. It’s a measly $15... or $10 if it’s on sale... the price of a 6 pack of beer. What’s there to envy at that price when it’s gonna last much longer than that 6 pack? As for profits, that’s what funds further development.
I came very late to Caustic, was going through Soundtestroom videos at the end of last year and saw Doug having a go on it. I couldn’t believe I’d been making music since the first iPhone and had never heard of it. I love it. The tutorial videos are top notch. Love the sound quality of the app, I’d say it’s easy for the basic-looking interface to take away from the amazing sound of the app. Gadget looks amazing of course. I love Gadget too but it’s so easy to get something going in Caustic in a few minutes.
Now I know Android Caustic has IAP I’m going to have to pick myself up a cheap tablet sometime!
Sure wish we could try-before-buy as I'm curious, but I sure don't need another synth.
Of Caustic? Got a Windows PC? Try the free Windows version.
Mac version too
This i have. I'll try. Thanks!
Just watched a short vid on the last desktop release. Can you export stems in ios in the same way as you can in the desktop version? Because that is pretty slick.
One more question, is this still actively being developed? Thanks folks.
Yes and not lately
Yes you can
That's why I said Caustic and Gadget were a good match.
Caustic export > AudioShare to master or add FX > Open in Gadget Rosario or Zurich.
Just an example of course.
This app is splendid. In a way, it reminds me of NS1 in that I was up and running in literally seconds. It just instantly makes sense. Clear, logical, efficient layout and workflow. Runs smooth as butter and sounds great. The song portion reminds me of Orion Pro. Don’t know I managed to stay away from this to this point but ... I’m really quite stoked about this purchase.
If Gadget had a song mode I would choose it (with Bilbao and Stockholm for sampling) hands down.
As it stands, I get tired of countless copying, pasting (to where I'll have 30+ scenes) and usually abandon the project.
Caustic I make songs (even though I like the instruments less.)
I'm a very late adopter myself and agree with you 100%. You can also easily export the separate midi stems to Cubasis and use them to drive other apps (actually, I sent it to Audioshare first and then to Cubasis). There is so much in Caustic that just feels so right - not so many obvious walls like so much in iOS. In fact, there have been a number of times in the week that I have had this where I thought I wouldn't be able to do something in it, but realized that I can. Amazing!
I agree.
If you work with 8 bar phrases a 6-8 minute song depending on the tempo is about 30 scenes. Copying scenes isn’t so bad as reorganising them and doing the little variations.
But Gadget works well as an Ableton style scene launcher. If you hooked up a properly mapped controller you could bust out a proper jam using only a few scenes.
Fastest way to arrange is to export your loop stems into Cubasis and arrange there. If you’re keen on automation you can record individual tracks in old school style. I do this a bit and it creates all kinds of happy accidents.
Other approaches are using things like Blocswave and Launchpad or BM3, or sequencing in Xequence and sending midi into Gadget.
Except that’s not possible. There is no way to map a controller to launch scenes or clips. 😕
I had a run through Caustic's instruments with my EWI (electric wind instruments) but most/all had no mono/legato mode for live playing (I think you can do it in the sequencer by overlapping notes, but I was specifically trying to play live). Am I missing something obvious?
Um yes. I’m not a complete idiot. I know that
What I mean to say is mapping your controller to the instruments you can tweak and adjust volumes while launching scenes in Gadget on the iPad screen. I made no mention of launching clips though.
Nanokontrol Studio can launch scenes and individually mute tracks as well. So... Checkmate.
Would you mind sharing the "proper controller mapping"?
I haven't found any info about this on KORG's web, but that doesn't mean a thing, as the while Gadget ecosystem is poorly documented...
All I’m saying is if you know what you’re doing you can use maybe 2-3 different scenes instead of 30 to produce a full length track using a controller to adjust things like volumes, filters, etc.
@bigcatrik caustic’s Modular synth has mono-legato (well, it’s mono by nature, and you can activate legato).
Interesting, because that‘s actually what i find a rather quick way to build a song (not the abandoning part of course 😉).
I used to think that it was hideously inefficient of Gadget to force us to have to copy a part wholesale, perhaps several times, to build a song structure. I now quite like it that way as it affords the opportunity to make something (or everything if you like) a tiny bit different each time. I prefer it that way now. I’m happy to simply play the same parts, as similarly as I can, and have each part repeat slightly differently. At the very least, even if it turns out to be an identical midi data copy, I’ll usually run though most of the instruments and scatter the velocities around a bit, differently each time.
+1
Ableton Live Clip/Scene Mode users most likely felt immediately at home with Gadget
I still find it much easier to build a song in Caustic than in Gadget which pushes me to Caustic when I want to get things done. I can get the sounds I want out of either. The downside of Caustic is the apparent lack of any further development. Hence NS2 for me.
