Alchemy pro.... iOS??

  • It was... back in the days. Many people still cry after it. It was before my time. So i can only cling my ears to the story of the earwitnesses :)

  • And I had all the sound packs :'(

  • I just bought an iPad Pro 10.5, and now my Air 1 can be my Alchemy/other oldies module. I kept it on iOS 10 for that reason. I own the desktop version so can pass patches to it. For as long as my desktop version still runs...

  • Am I the only lucky one who doesn’t in any shape or form care about Alchemy?

    Ignorance is bliss :)

  • What made this synth so special?

  • The sound packs.

For many people, it was a really amazing sounding synth, with unusual sounding presets (IAP) and decent parameter access. It was also a free app that integrated well with the desktop version. Alchemy's sample/sound manipulation was superb. I feel like I never explored that combination enough, so am trying to keep that alive, moving patches from Mac mini to iPad.

The was a lot of heated discussion when the Apple acquisition silently took place, and people were not happy. The iOS version disappeared, and many people lost access to sounds they had purchased.

    From KVR:

Alchemy features additive, spectral and granular synthesis and resynthesis, sampling, and a very capable virtual analog engine with unison and PWM. You can morph or crossfade between sources. You can import your own samples from SFZ, WAV or AIFF files. A wide range of analog modeled filters are included, in addition to a flexible rack of effects which includes all those from CamelPhat and CamelSpace as well as many new effects such as a high quality reverb. The innovative modulation system is extremely flexible, yet easy to use. Alchemy also features a powerful arpeggiator with the ability to import the groove from any MIDI file for immediate synchronization to a beat.

No, I was never that bothered with it either. Had the basic app, but didn’t get the packs.

I’ve got it as part of Logic as well. Sounds nice, but I prefer more control over sculpting sounds.

  • There's a big difference between the iOS and the Logic version, the latter has plenty of control over sculpting sounds compared to the former iOS release.
Alchemy iOS was more like the concept of Synthmaster Player.
If you own Logic/Mainstage, you can use the built-in autosampler feature to auto-create sampler programs from any Logic/Mainstage instrument, not only Alchemy.
Virsyn AudioLayer supports the import of these EXS24 programs, as does bs-16i if you don't mind converting the EXS programs to SF2 sound fonts. AudioLayer lacks a number of features like preset control and multimode (bs-16i does that) but on the other hand, AL can "stream from disk".

  • Still best synth ever for me on iOS!
    R.I.P.
I had 1000 presets imported to the app....
My secret sauce when i was an iOS only musician :)

  • Looking on the bright side, it does come included free in GarageBand

The morphing, best presets ever for a synth and some unique FX not to find anywhere else.
While the iOS version was mainly a player and no access to the full synth engine and presets with resynthesis won‘t work on iOS it still was a wonderful tool with a perfect GUI to perform on iPhone and iPad for me.
Oh yeah, i miss it almost as hard as i wait for NanoStudio 2 :)

I wish i have not fallen into the trap of upgrading and i still would have my favorite tools on my idevice.
I wish there was a 32bit wrapper for iOS?
    Is there?
But i will forgive Apple if they one day bring the full engine to iOS as well....

  • And I didn’t like it enough to get any sound packs either. I thought it sounded too digital, not in an interesting way. Couldn’t put my finger on why though now as I’ve forgotten.
Didn’t like the gui either, and that’s maybe what put me off. Although the morphing was a nice feature. :)

    Yeah the morphing is nice.

I think for me I prefer to roll my own sounds - it was all a bit too preset based. Saying that though it did sound very good.

Was that Lennon's quote? Probably not, he would have been dead by then.

Yeah, if it was anything like Alchemy in GB, I can’t see the reason to cry over this synth. It has lots of contenders these days. And it’s like you only remember the good things, not the bad... things get better over time with legend status. Yeah... I’m bored today, so sorry for my negativity!

Maybe....i‘m a sucker for synths but there is nothing like Alchemy (the one in Logic is my favorite synth together with P900). Most other synths are static against it as well for me.
I wonder why no one (beside Sunrizer) also offers preset morphing.
It also was one of the best for me to perform on even an iPhone. Beside Animoog, there are not much iOS synths which are good here really.

Model 15, say no more. I use it for everything. You can’t say there are no good synths besides animoog
There are lots of good synths on iOS. You must have an even worse mood than me today, sir!

There are some good synths...but not great to perform. Model 15 even has no multi-touch to control parameters.
But hell...i‘m indeed in a bad mood....so i might think about it again in some days :)

lol cheers mate, grab a beer 🍻

You’re right about the performing aspects

  • For me, Alchemy hit the sweetest of spots for an iOS musical instrument. I still have it on my iPad4 and am so happy it's still running fine. Just wish I'd purchased all of the sound packs.

Something about the interface...again, for me, made it the best place in which to create. I am glad there is the remnant inside of GarageBand, and hope they add more sounds to it.

  • Loved the original on my old PC. They made two great fx too.

I’m sure iOS could run the full version now

  • Ladies and gentlemen that horse is out of the barn however GB left you a pony and perhaps it’ll grow up to be the thoroughbred you once rode. In the mean time a herd of ponies have been born which imho, fill that Stable and who might outperform our missing giddy-up.or at least keep us in the saddle

But....but....will it ever gets the more unicorn knob like Obsidian will have...

    Awesome. You win. B)

  • Alchemy was never meant to be the sort of synth that sound designer types could use to create their own sounds from scratch. It was a geat sounding preset player that had synth patches created by pros. The presets were very unique - not the sort of sounds that I could create from scratch - and the magic was in the ability of those unique sounds to spark my imagination and help me create music that I wouldn’t have otherwise. I agree with Cib on this app - it was a magical app well ahead of its time on iOS. It is really too bad that Apple haven’t just released the original apps on iOS/Mac OS/PC OS. I am glad that I still have Alchemy on my old iDevices and I use it regularly.

  • It's the reason I have not gone to IOS 11.
You will have to pry Alchemy from my cold dead hands...
