iPad Pro dilemma (which model to go for?)

I’ve been using the iPad Pro 12.9 1st gen with 128GB (max when I bought it), but I want to update it. I’m currently torn between the newest 12.9 with 512 GB, or potentially awaiting the new models hopefully to be announced next week. I remember seeing issues reported here wrt crackling using music apps and I wondered if there has been any resolution to this issue?

My main usage is music, photo and video which is one of the reasons I want the max amount of SSD space, so please don’t bother with the jibes about ‘how could anyone need 512GB’ 😉.

Besides the potential cost for the new models, another reason I’m considering the 2nd gen Pro is the shift from Lightning to USB-C and the loss of the headphone jack. Although I realize that USB-C may well be a better overall solution, I’m pretty sure that it also means having to buy a whole slew of new/additional dongles/interfaces etc (with the attendant Apple costs) whereas I could simply carry on with the 2nd gen Pro.

I won’t be making a decision until I see what the new Pros can do, but any members who have experienced using both models can give me any feedback, I’d appreciate it.

    Hi !

I came to the same conclusion.
If you don't push too much, there's no glitches now with IOS 12, even with pro's 1st gen.
I'm replacing my pro's 12'9 1st gen with pro's 10'5 2nd gen, and getting 20% more CPU usage available (with AUM) which gives quite new possibilities, enough to gives me the space I really needed now, but after almost 3 years of good services...
Omho having not so much ram, not so much CPU force you to use program change, think a bit more about what you really need, and it's much better for the musicality to keep in mind the essential !

Of course you can't run 3 Model D, 2 Model 15 , 1 Animoog, 1 DRC at the same time without glitches on pro's 2nd gen. So what ? Quote me one hit song that use 3 Model D at the same time ?...That's also why samplers exists...

I just need 1 12'9 pro 2nd gen because of Cubasis / mastering tracks, so I need a big screen for that, and I want to use my usual headphones for that task which is part of the essential to me.
I'll get it tomorrow second hand, at a very good price. :)
Going to the very new iPad means paying a lot, buying dongles, buying new (good) bluetooth headphones that I have absolutely 0 knowledge about...(price, quality, stability...)

So paying way more to get frustrated, I did that already when the 1st pro's were released with an unstable IOS and while I realized that very few developers knew about program changes :D

Now I'm finally making music without USB C and bluetooth headphones, I can live with that ;)

I bought the 2017 iPad Pro 12.9” 256GB/4G the releaseweek last year, and, the problem with digital noise and strange lag was driving me crazy for a long time...

But, it’s gone since long time ago!
What I can say just now is with iOS12.1 beta my iPad adventure have never been better!
    Everything runs sooooo smooth!
Using Affinity Photo and Designer a lot also and they are gorgeous to use on the big 2017 Pro device...

This year will probably be the first year since 2010 that I’m NOT going to buy a new iPad...
Why? Can’t see any advantages a new iPad could deliver that should cost me another 1000 bucks to upgrade - and, I don’t wanna loose the analog headphone jacket eigher...

Agree with most of what you said. There may be no need to replace the Pro so soon.

As for dongles and if you want to upgrade, there may be all-in-one hub solutions like this down the road for iPad due to USB-C, no headphone jack, no home button, etc:

    https://www.amazon.com/MacBook-Thunderbolt-HomeSpot-Aluminum-Readers/dp/B076BKF1SM

    https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Yuanj-Multi-Port-Charging-MacBook/dp/B0791BZBGQ

12.9" is huge and un-mobile unless we want to use at the desk.

How big is it? This big...

However, Lars confirmed from his experience that 12.9" gives the best user experience of Cubasis. To me, 11" is a sweet-spot as 10.5" did not make much difference in resolution from 9.7" (not sure why Apple did not make the 11" instead of 10.5" and now rumored to be replacing 10.5" with 11"). Traveling with a 12.9" would give that "Look at me!" impression.

Pay no attention to those who advocate on less storage. Years ago when 3 GB laptops were the norm, I bought a 25 GB Dell (top of the line at that time with max capacity costing 5.4K) and some people jaw-dropped asking why would anyone need so much storage. My answer - "Because I'm a professional - not a granny using it for browsing the internet, watching cat videos, sending email and typing some Word docs". (and I ran out of room on it anyway).

I always bought cellular iDevices with max configuration but they all ran out of room even before they became obsolete and I don't even use them to store personal photos or videos. The only reason I upgraded to newer models every time was due to running out of room! On my current Air 2, I had to delete all the 9 seasons of my favorite Shark Tank (more than 200 episodes) and Google Play Movies & TV app that stored these shows to make room. With no external memory card slots, maximum storage on our iDevices is the way to go (unless the hub solutions come with card slots with an easy way to store and transfer files on memory cards).

Definitely wait for the new models, as even if you decide to buy a current Pro, they will surely come down in price before/when the new ones are released.

I doubt I'll be upgrading unless the newbies are spectacular, as my 10.5'' Pro is amazing!

  • Thanks to all for the great feedback!

WRT not being able to run multiple instances of heavy hitters like the Moogs etc, it's no issue for me as I don't use it for "live" playing... I'm a build-it-up-track-by-track musician, and since I use Auria Pro as my main DAW, I have no issues in freezing tracks to reduce CPU load etc. I'm super glad to hear that the 'crackle issue' has been laid to rest as that was the main thing I worried about with the Gen 2's.

Size-wise, I'm def sticking with the 12.9. I've got large hands, and my fine motor skills seem to be eroding as I push 70, so the extra screen real estate combined with the Apple Pencil work really well for me. Additionally, AP takes full advantage of that big screen, making it much easier to use.

From everything I'm currently reading, the upcoming models are simply too thin to support the headphone jack, and I'd really miss that. I'm already hating it on my iPhone 8 Plus as I've always got to remember the fucking dongle, and thank you very much, no, you can't charge it at the same time! Frustrating. Having to reinvest in another prolly several hundred (Cdn$) just to get back to the same functionality that I already have just makes investing in a newer and undoubtedly more expensive iPad Pro an even harder lump to swallow. And don't even get me started on Bluetooth... listening alone might be OK, but for creating music, there will always be lag.

I'm certainly not going to make any decisions until next week's event, but overall, I wonder whether the upcoming model won't speced beyond what I really need. (Let alone beyond a cost that my darling CFO will approve :o ).

I have both models. I can’t say the 2017 model is a much better machine than the 2015 model.
It’s faster, and Siri responds without it being powered, but the screen is sometimes freezing. It’s much better under ios12, but the freezing problem almost drove me crazy. I still have a more intense love relationship with my 2015, even under ios12...

A week ago I bought the iPhone XS max, and if the 2018 iPads are as sleek as the phone, it would be wonderful.
My advice is to wait a few more days to see what’s coming. One never knows with Apple :)

  • The whole losing of the headphone port and the move to get us to use bluetooth is a big turn off to me. There are some apps that no matter what I do, if I'm using bluetooth headphones, simply will not connect. Frustrating to say the least. I'll use bluetooth headphone for sitting around-on-the-couch work but not for anything serious.

I feel that apple is constantly doing this to their customer base and it really sucks. They tell us what we want. Of course, this is nothing new and I can get in line behind all the people who are ticked at them for it.

What I will do is use my iPad Pro 12.9 to it's death and hope that all of this crap is solved by then. I'm never an early adopter for this reason. Best of luck!
