IConnectMIDI4+ issues incorporating hardware

I recently added the iConnectMIDI4+ to my setup because I wanted to be able to communicate between my iPad, a few hardware synths, and Ableton 10.

My Setup

I currently have an iPad Pro plugged into USB 1 of the iConnect, my computer (Windows 10) plugged into USB3, and a USB hub (connected to the USB outputs of a minilogue, a monologue, and a Keystep midi controller) plugged into the host port. I also have a Behringer audio interface—recognized by Ableton—into which I have the audio/headphone outputs of the Korg synths and the iPad, which outputs to monitors.

On the iPad I have Audiobus, AUM, apeMatrix, Modstep, and Studiomux. Oh, and I guess also GarageBand.

My Goal

I would like to send midi back at forth at will between the hardware, iPad, and Ableton, so that sometimes iPad MIDI drives hardware or Ableton, or sometimes Ableton drives hardware or iPad, or really whatever occurs to me in the moment.

I also really, really want to process my hardware synths with iPad effects, and then either outputting to the monitors, recording in Ableton, or recording in the iPad.

My Problems

  1. I don’t know how to get Ableton to recognize the audio from the iPad via the iConnect while also recognizing the audio from the synths via the Behringer audio interface. I also am unable to get the audio from the synths into the iConnect (which I suspect is not possible, as I am reasonably sure that audio does not come out of the ‘logue USB connections...). Ableton seems to only recognize either the Behringer interface or the iConnect interface; I can switch between them via the Preferences menu, but would prefer not to.
  2. I cannot at all get the audio from the synths into the iPad for processing. I have StudioMux, but the windows client (and thus Ableton) does not recognize that my iPad is connected when it is plugged into the iConnect. I can just plug the iPad directly into the computer, and then I can route audio via Ableton & StudioMux which works (at least until StudioMux crashes, which is often), but again this requires switching cables around.

I hoped that the iConnect would act as a central communication brain for my setup, and that I could set it up once and forget about it, but I am not so sure now.

Does anyone have any experience using iConnect in this way? Thanks for any advice!

  • Mac computers have a thing called "aggregate device", which treats a group of audio interfaces like a single interface, with more ins and outs. I don't know if there is an equivalent on windows, that would still allow you to use ASIO drivers for the interfaces, which you want, for the lowest latency.

If you can't find an aggregating solution on windows, maybe using something like studiomux, rather than the iconnect, would allow you to send audio and midi to the ipad, and you could use Ableton, as the hub, to assign audio and midi routing on a per song/project basis?

  • Ok I start off, don’t think Ableton will recognise two soundcrads at the same time on your PC so it’s either the iconnect or the behringer.

Try the free CopperLan app for routing Midi. You can route ports, channels and controller data separately...set and forget routing for a complete Midi hardware and software setup across multiple computers/ iPads if desired..

It's helpful to rename the ports in the iConnect to something meaningful for your setup before setting up the routing..

Regarding Audio, I use Dante Via which allows any type of audio interface to be mixed and matched on the one machine i.e USB, Firewire, Thunderbolt, PCI and freely route Audio between hardware and software locally and across networked machines.

On pc there is ASIO4ALL, on mac aggregate device. Use them to merge sound sources and destinations from several interfaces. Then use them as audio device in Live.
This works in theory, but in practice it will be useless because of the latency (routing stuff back and forth).
    An example:
Your audio interface adds lets say 10ms latency when monitored through Live (the only way to send audio to iPad through iCM), iCM will add another 10ms (but probably more if you want smooth operation), iPad host will add another 10ms routing the audio through an effect, than on the way back to pc/mac another 10ms (iCM) and 10ms (monitoring through Live). This will make it really hard to play/align with the rest of your project and 10ms in is underestimated value, in most cases, it's usually way more.

As midi interface iCM is quite flexible but for audio it's pretty much useless.

Can you use Dante Via with iPad?

  • edited October 2018

Thank you all for your thoughtful replies! I'm looking into copperlan and Dante via, but I'm not sure they will work. Copperlan doesn't seem to recognize that my ipad is plugged in, and Dante via looks like it is built for a more professional production or enterprise uses. And again, does not recognize the ipad.

After spending more time with it today, I think the problem is that my computer does not recognize that an ipad is plugged in when I connect it via iConnect. This prevents studiomux from working, as it does not recognize that an ipad is connected.

I use the iConnectAudio4+ ... iOS sees Jack 1 (10 channels) and Dante sees Jack 2 (10 channels) . The iConnect app routes Port 1 <-> Port 2 and Dante then routes Port 2 to anywhere locally or on a network. A camera connection kit is not required with the iConnectAudio4+

  • an iConnectAudio4+ should handle the full setup without any additional audio system software (only 2 external synths if I understood correctly).
I have no experience with the Midi version, which routes audio streams as 'piggypack'.
The Behringer Interface wouldn't be needed either.

  • Would the Audio4+ see and route midi between everything?

  • yes, if you connect the Hub that currently holds your midi gear to the iCA4+ 'slim'-USB midi port everything is shown on both iPad and Win10.
You can route midi and audio (without additional software protocols), so it's a very cable-efficient solution.

  • I finally got my ica4+ it’s frickin awesome! 👍

  • Ha, me too! Though this morning I have run into an issue of the iPad suddenly not recognizing that it's connected to the iConnect. It was working perfectly last night but not now. Frustrating.
