Best iOS App/Synth for Making Dark Music

I’m looking for an app/synth that focuses on cool, dark, industrial, spacey, sounds, noises, etc. Thanks!

Comments

  • LayR and Kaspar come to mind

  • Groove Rider can do it ;)

  • Synthscaper

  • Bram Bos new Noir thingy that’s not out yet :p

  • If you don’t mind non AU, than Synth Q makes some fine Industrial sounds. Ripplemaker and Ruismaker FM are a good combo.

To be honest, you are ruined for choice really for noise makers on iOS.

    Laplace, Photophore

esp with some effects, KORG mono/poly, ARP and iWavestation (for crisp sounds) can all come into play as well
also, Poison-202 (on sale as of now)
granular synths like quanta and spacecraft

  • Mitosynth
    SynthScaper
    Scythe

  • Elastic Drums, especially with Merzbow IAP
    Cyclop bass synth
Yonac synths: Kasper is better but Kauldren is AU and has the spawn 2 feature which is really nice for getting unique presets that are still in the style you are looking for.
GR-16 with bitcrush and decimate liberally applied and the IFX modulated.

Klevgrand had some great fx, Squashit Multiband Distortion is amazing, also Degrader and DAW Cassette

Audio Damage Grind and Ratshack Reverb, Axon 2 (is a bit difficult to master and doesn't play well with others)

Amazing Noises Moebiis lab, Daedalus and apesoft Sparkle....

Tardigrain and most of the other Humbletune stuff

We're seriously blessed with apps for dark/industrial/noise/ambient stuff.

  • Photophore
    Tardigrain
    Dedalus
    Magellan
all with lots of distortion and reverb.

  • If you dig in, detune, and get creative with modulation, you can get "cool, dark" sounds from most synths, including the free Synth One. As for iOS effects, Amazing Noises and Kymatica all the way

  • Instruments:
    Cyclop,
    CrystalSynthXT
Z3TA+ (sadly no longer available on appstore but has some amazing dark/moody presets)
    76 Synthesizer
    Volt
    Earhoof
    Seline Redux

    Drums/Groovebox:

    Elastic Drums
    Axon 2
    Seekbeats
    Egoist
    Thesys
    Skram

  • Thanks for all the excellent replies and suggestions. Greatly appreciated!

    Moebius Lab
    Flux Pad
    KMachine
    DRC
    Animoog
    DM2
    Shoom
    iDensity
    Reslice
    Kronoker
    GeoShred
    EFX
    Fieldscraper

  • Try Settings>Display & Brightness> then turn brightness all the way down and you can use any app after that.

  • Old thread so missing newer recommendations but you might want to check it out: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/3760/mean-nasty-dark-and-dirty

  • Hehehe!! I'm going to go a route that no one has mentioned yet.

Along with Westgatesounds sound fonts (which just happen to be on sale for 50% off)

Take some time and listen to the audio examples--they sound pretty dark to me.

    SynthScaper and DRC.
Both are very nicely done. Both universal, and also DRC exists for all platforms. Almost too good

  • Merzbow IAP for Elastic Drums ? :o

  • Digital D1. Some of the pads sound really dark in a really pleasing way.

  • LayR is really dark, superdark!! Great synth!!!

"Dark" makes me think "serious", and a lot of virtual analog synthesizers have the potential to be silly and blippy sounding. It is imperitive to have some kind of complexity to the sound, and avoid dry, awkward nintendo type sounds. Some of these silly sounds can be dressed up with effects- delay, chorus, distortion. I really like Emo Chorus to dress up synth sounds. Evolving sounds, layered sounds, ghostly sounds. I would look at the PPG wavetable synths, or something like Tardigrain, for moody pads and such. I like the yellow synth in gadget, as well. Animoog can get some nice, lush complexity, as well, when you turn up the unison setting (in the 'thick' panel), and moving through the wavetables with the path and orbit features. Good luck in your search for darkness.

I went all over that ghetto site and saw some neat graphics and flowery language but not a single audio preview.

For darkness I recommend SpaceCraft and SoundScaper

It takes some digging at the original site (westgatesounds.net), but I eventually found some audio demos and even 15 or 20 free soundfounts that sound quite good.
That page is a mess, though.

Yeah, it isn't the craziest he's done obviously, but it was enough to picque my interest and it's not so stylized that you can't make it your own. Fun stuff.
