What's the closest you've seen to natural voice synthesis for singing?

What's the closest you've seen any software come to synthesizing a natural voice for singing?

Talkbox has been around since Frampton, and there's tons of stuff with computerized sounding voice effects. But that's not what I mean.

I'm a dude with a baritone voice. What I want I do my own section of vocals with a flavor inspired by Janis Joplin, or Frankie Valli, not to copy them by as a stylistic choice for different flavors of singing or tuning their parameters to even create original styles?

Maybe nothing has come close yet? I feel intuitively there's no doubt it's possible and will happen eventually. I've been looking through research papers and people have started to work on the problem.

But it's important to make sure of what's already out there. Maybe I just haven't seen something? Maybe the dream vision is not here but anything would still be interesting to look at.

Thanks -

  • Vocaloid by Yamaha

  • Vocaloid 5 is probably the best available at the moment, I really wish there was something like this on IOS.

  • Yep, Vocaloid 5 is probably the best commercial software available.

An ios version of Vocaloid is available on the Japanese Apple store.

  • I still Have Miriam :) She's kept in a box in a cupboard !

  • I had Miriam too and she did some backing vocals on a track. The realism has noticably improved since then.

I just looked it up, Miriam came out in 2004 :astonished:

  • All the insight appreciated!

It's definitely better than any product I had seen so it was helpful.

Still feel confident it'll take probably less than 5 years with the incredible new AI algorithms that keep being discovered, before we're not in Kansas anymore, and things currently hard to imagine will be possible.

  • Did a Vocaloid song as a one off. Warning: super weird. It was fun to make, but a lot of work adjusting midi to approximate western style singing, and it's still pretty hard to understand (lyrics on the soundcloud page if you're flummoxed). Japanese is much easier to synthesize, apparently, and its engine is optimized for it. They have some new western-style voices that are a bit more useable, though.

  • Impressive for a synthesized voice, it more sounds like a processed real voice. I hope the western version can be brought to the iPad (might be a big ask I know, I think there is a much larger Japanese market for this sort of thing).

I contacted Yamaha and the Cubasis dude on the forum but both never replied.
