Studio monitors under $200

I'm looking for studio monitors under 200$ - does it make sense to buy so cheap monitors?
I know that You are more experienced than me in this area :) co could You suggest something?

  • I have some old powered monitors I’m more than happy with. I’m of the opinion that it’s only worth spending a lot of money If your listening room is up to scratch sound wise. No point in having the best speakers in a poor environment.

Even with more expensive speakers and top class studio environment, most peeps will still have a cheaper set for comparison purposes.

You can easily get a decent set of monitors for your 200.

The Presonus Eris 4.5 on the U.K Amazon site for £135.00 a pair(!) look like incredible value.

I've worked with M-Audio BX5s for a good while now and I'm very happy with them. I believe I payed £150 for the pair.

  • Maybe headphones would be a better choice (great headphones at that price) and later do some acoustic treatment and buy something better ....
But if you don’t have any descent speakers to enjoy music , then cheap monitors sound like a good solution :)

  • I'm in the market this year also and I have been eyeing Mister @Monzo's KRK RP5 G3's which people seem to like, but I did buy the Kid Mister @Iso's Presonus Eris E4.5 for a lot less last year and they sound good and he loves them. I suppose the question is: For your average struggler (self) is there really that much difference?

  • I watched for a sale and got a pair of M-Audio Bx8s for like $175 or so. I am happy with them.

  • If I was buying now, I would definitely audition the Yamaha HS5. The HS10 was in many a studio and while the HS5 is about £135 each, they may be worth a listen at least.

Saying that, I’m sure you will get something for your money if you shop around. Don’t forget to look around second Hand as well. A good pair of studio monitors are often kicking around from people having to give up their bedroom studios.

  • You wont get an accurate representation with them anyways, so the whole idea of "studio" monitors kinda loses its meaning. You might get some deacent non studio speakers and amp for that price used.

You mean Mackie CR4? Or You Talking about the prince?

This. Without a treated room and/or spending more money, especially. Maybe consider at least adding some "room correction" software as well to your spend - it's not the same as room treatment, but it can help.

Lets start with the missing subwoofer or minimum of 12" low end speaker. Needs treated room etc etc

  • I’ve mixed a lot of music and sound for video on a combination of good headphones and near-field monitoring with 8” two-way speakers in untreated rooms. Nobody ever had a negative comment on my mixes. FWIW

Headphones is the key when you cant trust your speakers and good balanced headphones is a must. My point is that there is no point really to focus on so called studio monitors, when its not possible to get speakers that you can trust. It would be better to save up some more or try to hunt some used amp and speakers.

  • The key aspect of monitors over regular speakers is to get your mixes to translate to other people's diverse systems. I've had a few early albums translation get screwed up, because of 5" monitors, and the inability to judge bass. 8" is a much easier size to use, even if they don't look cute sitting on your desk...

The m-audio 8" are fine, the event tr-8 are nice, even the behringer 8" genelec knockoffs are useable. Krk Rokit 8's, also fine. If there is one single piece of gear to splurge on, in a home studio, it is the monitors.

Regarding room treatment, yes, it is a really worthwhile endeavor, but, if you don't have it, you can reduce the effect of room reflections by getting the monitors closer to your head. This shrinks the sweet spot, but increases the balance of direct sound vs reflected sound, and seperates the arrival time more. This is the idea of near field monitors. Getting your desk off the back wall if at all possible, will help the sound from the speakers as well.

  • I just got the jbl 306p mkii monitors and love them, the 305p I would assume sound fantastic as well. If you look around you can find them for not much more than $200.

  • Cheap and well received are the little Tannoy monitors: https://thomann.de/nl/tannoy_reveal_402.htm
