getting ready for iPad IOS music making. Should I start with Audiobus or Modstep?
I'm going to get a new iPad Pro and was wondering what app I should start with to integrate my music apps with?
I do have Cubasis, but I don't have Audiobus or Modstep. Will I need either. Seems like the way to go to link apps together?
Comments
If you already have Cubasis, you will probably get more from Audiobus than Modstep as modstep is primarily a sequencer (albeit a very good one), that being said, it largely depends on what apps you plan on linking together, you can probably do a lot of what you would need within Cubasis already.
You have no need for Modstep - and Audiobus isn't totally necessary as you should be able to do everything you need to do in Cubasis, but Audiobus sure makes things flow alot smoother for connecting various apps together. Plus, we wouldn't be here without Audiobus - so throw them a few dollars and support.
Be prepared for a long discussion.
There is no best way to do it.
Some people prefer linking many apps using Audiobus, ApeMatrix or AUM.
Others prefer to access all sound generators and effects inside one DAW, or even decide for a completely closed system like Korg Gadget.
There are so many personal preferences influencing your best workflow, you'll have to find out for yourself ... or tell us what you're looking for in more detail.

So true.
My personal, generic recommendation is Audiobus. Throw in Audiobus Remote for even more usefulness.
It really depends on what you are planning to do, but I find those 2 apps useful for many situations.
And yes, I only use 1 device primarily, but still find that AB Remote extends AB’s usefulness nicely.
I have all 3 granted but I think Audiobus is useful for linking programs that dont integrate directly. So I think youll find you may need it.
Cubasis v. Modstep is more of a question of
1) do you want to work in a mostly linear (think traditional DAW) environment? Yes then Cubasis.
2) more pattern or loop based(think Ableton)?
Yes then Modstep.
I like AUM as a mixer more than audiobus. It looks clean, saves midi and au app states, can record directly to audioshare(another must have), has bus sends, ableton link, and works flawlessly with all my midi controllers.
Cubasis is what I use for production. It's far from perfect, but better than garage band and easier to use than auria pro.
I'd get BM3 before modstep too.
I do love this community. I can get a useful and multi faceted answer in seconds! Thanks to everyone for these great insights!
@rs2000, On the desktop, I have found a DAW and workflow that suits me really well using Bitwig and its devices and modulators. (I wish Bitwig were on IOS). I wouldn't mind finding something similar on IOS but it doesn't have to be. My music is more abstract and on the less structured side. Using lots of effects and Synthscaper Spacecraft Granular type sounds. Maybe add a guitar track here and there....
Maybe apeMatrix might be worth a look for you.
You should get Audiobus if for no other reason than without it we wouldn't have this excellent forum.
I totally agree and just did get it!
If I were starting fresh a few months ago, my choices would be : Groove Rider & Gadget..
If starting fresh today, I'd probably go Synth D1 while it's still $5, Grooverider, Caustic and learn them inside and out for the next few weeks, while waiting till black friday sale to go on a spending spree.
But that's just me.
If I was starting again, I would probably make the same mistake and buy buy buy lol.
Seriously though. I would just use Cubasis and buy any sound sources and FX that tickle your fancy.
Get AudioBus for sure, but here are my list of apps that extend Cubasis:
Rozeta.
StepPolyArp Unit.
Noise.
Then spend the rest of your money on decent FX apps.
Is it strange even after a year of only making music on iOS I haven’t bought Audiobus?
I use AUM, Audiobus, and Cubasis together but lately I’ve been messing with ApeMatrix and it’s insane. AUM I absolutely couldn’t live without. AudioShare also. Those two are must haves for iOS music making.
You only need what works for you and so you will get all kinds of answers. I don’t use Audiobus except for Audiobus 2 and that is my last resort for connecting things together if I can’t do it any other way. Not that it isn’t an excellent program, but AUM is absolutely perfect for my hosting/mixing/recording needs.
Just use what you have and expand one thing at a time.
I'd work with Cubasis for awhile and see what limits it imposes on what you want to do. Then when you're there, ask how to accomplish the specific goals you're unable to obtain.
Well Congrats if you are getting a "NEW" IPAD
IPAD comes with Garageband, start with that you might like it.
You can connect aditional apps to 'garageband with Audiobus.......
You do NOT need Modstep.......if you have a D.A.W. overkill
Look at tutorials on YouTube for other Digital Audio Work stations like Cubasis, Auria Pro, Korg Gadget etc
I suggest going to The Sound Test Room at Youtube for tutorials...
Do not just start buying apps without doing research you will waste a lot of money.
I hope this helps.......
There are so many different approaches ...
I don't use AUM at all because the sequencing and audio processing features of Cubasis are more important for me, and Cubasis is a fairly good IAA and AU host.
If Gadget hadn’t existed, I might have settled on Rotor (not with the knobs though), or NuvSox, or Yamaha Mobile Sequencer and got good at one of those instead.
If what you want to do is record music, then make Cubasis or another DAW the center of that. Auria Pro and Modstep are really good too.
If what you mainly want to just play, then get AUM.
I tend to play a lot more on my iPad than finish stuff, so AUM is best for me.
Aside from D1, I would wait until Black Friday/Christmas before stocking up on synths and effects.
totally. aum and audioshare are necessities.
Wow, I wonder how I still manage to make music, play synths, add and chain fx, all without AUM.
subjective. i find audiobus doesnt suit my workflow. aum does. sorry to have offended you,
Yep, that's all I wanted to point out - it's a subjective matter.
All is good
You know I completely agree that what you have and how you use it, if it works for you is good enough. I should have mentioned that whatever works for you is what you should use. My previous comment is IMO only. I really have become super happy with using AUM. It just works for me in Conjunction with my other apps.
I think ModStep would be great to drive midi inside Cubasis (don't have Cubasis, but I am sure it's possible).
Audiobus is completely different from Modstep . It's a lightweight host that ,among other features, provides great app switching .
Since you already have Cubasis, AB3 might be useful for the app-switching workflow but IMO there is no need going to AUM at all.
