USB-C compatibility (worries) - does not work with USB keyboards?
I've been digging around in the Apple store as I'm thinking of buying my daughter a new iPad and Pencil for her 21st Birthday.
I added a USB-C to USB adaptor to the shopping bag and read the reviews - these are from Mac users obviously as the USB-C iPad pros are not out in the wild yet.
Here is one that caught my attention:

Works on some USB items but not a MIDI, USB powered keyboard

Works okay on standard non-powered devices like USB sticks but the MacBook Pro fails to recognise a Korg MIDI keyboard when connected via this adapter.
My daughter is also a musician and she would like to plug a small USB keyboard in - as I guess would most of us!! Does this mean you would have to use a powered hub - or does that not even work?
also I was looking at the USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter,
There are so many bad reviews it is appalling!!

I have now bought a total of six of these things, one each with each new Macbook or MacBook Pro I've been buying for staff. The results have been consistent. They work (usually for a few weeks) and then they stop working - and it's almost always the USB-C connector to the external screen that stops working. Oddly, it only stops working for that purpose- it's still works for power. I've also regularly taken the adaptor back to my local Apple store - where they replace them without fuss - only for the same thing to happen with the new ones.
It's very frustrating as these adaptors are essential with the MacBook - which only has the one port.
Having looked at these I am seriously concerned about buying either a Mac or a iPad that has USB-C on it... there are many reports about them disconnecting at the slightest touch - and people saying they have had five or six faulty dongles!! If we are going to have just ONE connector it needs to be bulletproof!
Not impressed.

You can expect these problems for at least the next 6 to 12 months, if not longer, if you buy one of the new iPads.
Apple will then come out with a slightly better design, but you will still be battling the dongle itself. Expect any musical productivity to go through the floor. It’s almost as if Apple designed these new computers and adaptors to break.
Yeah I hope things would improve with time.
It’s the fact that these bad reviews go right back to 2016 that worry me.
Apple is in the business of disruption, plain and simple. The constant disruption causes their users and the market to constantly adapt and lock into consumerism-like buying behaviours.
They knew this would disrupt a very large amount of users and cause them to buy more things.
My entire professional studio has been run on the same apple usb-c to usb connector since the MBPs came out with usb c. Works fine, never disconnects. I have one I use when I travel too, same thing, never an issue.
Sure glad to hear that! Thanks, mate!
That’s really good to hear thanks!
Also for what it’s worth the official Apple press release mentioned that USB-C will be used for music instruments.
