Synth app with seq tempo setting per preset?

edited November 2018 in General App Discussion

Hi all, trying to find a synth app with a built-in sequencer that has assignable tempo per patch (i.e., not just global tempo). It also needs to receive program change messages. Trying to integrate with a controller to call up different-tempo sequences in live performance. A bonus is if it can also send MIDI clock (to my hardware synth/master keyboard to sync delay, etc.). That’s not asking for much, right? 😂

Appreciate any insight!

  • What kind of synth do you need? How powerful of a built-in sequencer do you need? I think Sunrizr can store the tempo of its arpeggiator. Perhaps Zeeon stand alone version does the same?

  • Thanks, @syrupcore. Not too powerful of a sequencer is necessary. Synth-wise, so long as it has the “80s basics” (sawtoothy brass, bass, etc), it will work. I’d also be open to a standalone sequencer, so long as it allows sequence and tempo (ie, “song”) switching by MIDI program change — something AUM and BM3 do not — and MIDI Clock out, of course.

I'd most likely use Cubasis in such a case, being free to use whatever synth I want.

Ok cool. So can Cubase receive tempo changes and/or song changes via MIDI program change from a keyboard controller? I wasn’t able to find a way to do that with BM3 or GarageBand (or anything really).

NEXT WEEK: AudioKit Digital D1 is about to have not one, but DUAL independent sequencers that can each have different time divisions saved per patch. Shhh... it's a secret. 🤫

That’s going to come in mighty handy :)

I believe Synthmaster One also allows time divisions (1/4, 1/8, 1/16, etc.) to be saved per patch, just not tempo. Will one of D1's sequencers also have selectable tempo per patch? Not that you could say... ;)

LayR has a built-in sequencer with assignable tempo per patch and MIDI out.

You can already save tempo information per patch in D1.

Thanks for confirming, Brice -- yes, I just figured that out as well. And it looks like the same is true for Synth One! Guess I've got a couple of new gotos -- AudioKit FTW! Thanks so much, guys!

Oh well, once again I've expected too much from Steinberg. Can't even find MIDI remote tempo control in the manual :/

There is one app that does what you want:
    Groove Rider.
Don't be irritated by the groovebox design.
It has 16 powerful synth engines built-in (listening on 16 different MIDI channels), each pattern can have its own tempo, you can select 128 different patterns including different sounds by Program Change 0-127, and if you either have a keyboard that can send MIDI clock or you use a different MIDI clock source for both, GR will follow that clock happily.
If 8-bar patterns are too short, you can use a chain of multiple patterns (see the manual).

If you need to use your own sampled instruments, you can load bs-16i and sequence that using Groove Rider too.
Limitations: MIDI sequences have a polyphony limit of four voices in each of the 16 parts, and when you sequence, all notes played at the same position must have equal length and velocity.
If you prepare the sequences before the show, I guess that won't really be a limitation.

Thanks, RS -- very good to know.

BB, apologies for missing this reply originally. I have LayR and will spend some time getting to know the sequencer. MIDI Out appears to be missing from the AudioKit apps at the moment, which is only an issue b/c I am wanting the app to drive the tempo of my hardware synth’s arpeggiator and delay. Thanks again for the tips.

No worries. Make sure to have a look in the global settings menu in LayR. You might need to turn some options on or off to fit your needs. Also, LayR’s sequencer can send MIDI CC data as well as note info within the same patch. Just a heads up if that’s what you need from it.
