Old sitar

Hello! I have a old sitar, from my grandmother.
She wants to sell it. It is a little bit damaged and it don't have string. I wanna know how much is it worth it? Thank you very much!

  • I dont know about sitars especially, but usually instruments like that are not worth selling. If its worth a lot, then you would likely get more by restoring it and then selling. Likely buyer would just buy it to sell for profit. If not worth a lot, then restoring it would likely cost a lot more than the instrument would be worth when restored and no one would like to buy it.

Your pictures just shows the damaged parts, and it seems the Sitar is not complete so I’m afraid there is not much money in it. It will be difficult to sell this Sitar. Maybe if you find a real lover who is able to repair such an instrument you can give it for free or for small money to make him happy.

I was bringing some high quality instruments from India and I use them by my own. But if I’m going to sell my Sitar, the instrument will be included case, in perfect condition, well tuned and ready to play. I will give also all spare parts someone could need incl. strings, tuning balls, mechanics...

... but only if I find someone who is really interested in Sitar I probably get some good money for it. 😎

Most musicians I know who love the Sitar , been in India for learning und purchasing a good instrument.

    Hari Om 😊

  • Interesting that you joined an iOS forum today just to post about this. The damage to the body is not a good sign. Sitar depends on vibration and resonance, and those cracks look like it is compromised. Too bad, as it doesn't look like a bad instrument otherwise. I foolishly bought one once with a crack in the gourd, and wound up giving it away to someone for an art project.

Don't expect to get much for it in the current condition. Also, not joining/logging into another forum to look at more pictures.
