Yea they mentioned doing a game few months back in-between to raise some more cash, since their music apps didn't bring in any (or enough)

  • Amidio, where is my sweet iHolophone?..

    oh

  • edited December 2013

A game just dropped, well in New Zealand (will be out in US around 11pm), that's developer name is Amidos (no I didn't spell wrong)....curious if it's them, here's the video

  • I hope Drumfire wasn't halted for that. Lol

  • Also, wish JR Hexatone went retina

  • When Pearl Guitar was released, Dev was posting here regularly, after that, wouldn't respond to messages or emails about fixing midi in Pearl Guitar. Guess he'll be back on release of Drumfire.

I will never buy from them again after being burned by noise.io and seline.

They don't seem to have a clear vision (games? wha?)

They only seemed active on AB forum when it first opened, and even then only to bother Seb and Michael for the SDK (trying to ride the gravy train).

Their apps are ugly (c'mon, mint.io looks cool for 3 minutes, then it sucks)

They take too long to update anything (or they just abandon apps that break in OS updates... Noise.io anyone? my first ios Synth. Mint.io is not even a sequal, it's a different app entirely. Just money grabbin. Hexatone hasn't been updated since 2011?

In short, they exemplify everything I think a music app developer should NOT be, even if they occasionally have an interesting looking app.

    //end rant

  • their early apps were really good back in 2008-2009 (c'mon everyone, only TC-11 is true successor of noise.io and i cant find any clones of hexatone or iholophone) but i do agree with @uglykidmoe

Abandoning apps, then coming with fixes that demand latest ios version you cant install, then abandon again... Add arrogant PR and self-proudness
    that's Amidio, huh.

    P.S.

I CAN'T FORGIVE them killing noise.io server with all that AWESOME presets users have created. Damn!

  • And i couldn't copy those presets because there was no "itunes file sharing" back then

Amidio makes good high quality music apps, no doubt about that. Noise.IO..,years ago...time to drop that eh? Mint.IO is a wicked groovebox (not meant to replace Noise.IO in any way), and definitely worth those few couple of bucks they're asking for it. Same goes for all their string/guitar apps, really great stuff. I don't know the history of Seline. But the version that's up now is great, lots and lots of great sampled sounds, and a really fresh way to play it all with the scale based weird keyboard.

When it works. They never fixed midi in Pearl Guitar after multiple messages and emails. I guess that "it's a tough world" comment means tough luck,

  • I understand that they are only 2 people... which is why they need to stop over-promising and under-delivering. They could take a lesson from some other devs about how to establish expectations and deliver.

I'd rather a dev promise to provide one update a year and make the deadline than to promise 3 updates and only deliver 1. Much less promise 3 entirely new apps, and not deliver any of them.

@uglykidmoe - i feel your pain but if you're gonna criticize these guys, I'd say you should also lay that same criticism of at least 50% or more of the ios music apps out there (with the exception of the regular devs who post here frequently). With that being said, the fact that they have to rely on making a game to just stay afloat financially makes me sympathize with devs in general as no wonder most app developers focus on the general music making hobbyist (respect, nothing wrong with it) as opposed to serious musicians who are more nitpicky about specs. I'm throwing out a wild guess here but until a more established artist makes a mind blowing album that utilizes ios apps, it will be very difficult for ios to grow. also yes i know there have been some big acts like bjork and damon albarn from the guerlliaz/blur, vernon reid from living colour who are fans of ios but the work theyve made on it wasnt memorable compared to their past work which was great. Plus when you look at what new, cutting edge artists are doing with computer based software like ableton, where is the incentive other than cheap apps and convenience to use ios? unless you take public transportation (like me), the latter is a non-issue, thus the value is really only price. Ok, thats all for my daily rant as well. Happy holidays

one more additional totally unrelated note: I'm really hoping electrify next is good. if more apps come out that either equal or do unique things that are not available on computer software, I will gladly pay $10-$20 per app instead of a bunch of buggy $3-$5 apps that i end up deleting after a month

  • I hated noise.io so much back in the day. Never liked any of their apps I've tried tbh.

  • Seems a little shady. In App Store, Pearl Guitar description, Audiobus is still listed as premium upgrade.

  • edited March 2014

    .

  • I know, but everyone that upgraded didn't know that.

  • edited March 2014

    .

  • I don't know if it was intentional, but I'm sure some users thought they had to upgrade to get AB.

  • edited December 2013

It's possible that the description is wrong (whether deliberate or accidental) but it's also possible that the new v1.2 release of Pearl Guitar requires an IAP for AB functionality for new users, but still lets old users get AB without the IAP. GB did the same kind of thing when it dropped to free - moved some base app functionality behind an IAP paywall for new users but kept it in for old users. The only way to know for sure would be for someone who has never gotten the app before to get it now (on iOS 7) and try using it in AB without getting the IAP.

Edit: someone confirmed that it does include AB for free even for new users. It's just the App Store description that's incorrect.

  • edited December 2013

They may well be losing business if people think they have to fork out another $7.49 for AB. If the description is wrong then fix it.

  • Given that the app is free I guess they aren't necessarily losing business on that end but instead trying to bolster the perceived value of the IAP to try increasing business.

  • Not a good business model from my experience. But hey....good luck to em

  • Mint.IO is really good. They also have a free version of the synth part from that as an iPhone app (star melody) which is also cool.

  • That appinfo is the old one, why they haven't changed I don't know. The first version had AB included in the IAP, they changed that with an update soon after the release (hence why they're not listed in the AB database on this site).

  • @gjcyrus forgive me if I respectfully disagree. Especially since Amidio plasters "Professional music apps" all over their website. Professional implies a number of things: quality, design, functionality, etc. Support, too.

While I may agree that the average user may not be as 'nitpicky' as more serious musicians, it is no reason to lower the standard of what should be considered "professional."

There are more than a few established music software/hardware companies that I don't buy from because of their reputation for bad support. They develop great tools, and many of their users are smart, talented, creative people. But I still won't buy in. It is a factor that any developer, distributor, service provider, or any other businessman should - in part - be judged on.

Things happen and maybe there are good reasons for why they've had issues in the past. But if you come in second place in a competition, they don't take into account that you were too busy to practice beforehand or your heat was turned off. You don't get extra points for that. You lost, no matter what the mitigating factors were. Suck it up and change your practice next time, or you'll keep losing.

There is no separate definition of "professional music app" for iOS. There is no separate definition for what makes a "good iOS developer" from being any other kind of developer. If it's a pro-app, it should stand up to the same standards as any professional software (within the limitations of the hardware it's being run on)

  • Anyone else noticed how "original" Amidio properties was bought out by zCage guy, who now makes those updates for apps?
