This is how much USB power the iPad can handle! | CCK & Lightning to USB3 - haQ attaQ 303
This is why you need a powered USB hub when using the older CCK to connect multiple USB devices to your iPad or iPhone. It's actually something I get asked about a lot. Hopefully this thorough video will explain it clearly. I even had to get myself a tool for measuring USB power current, just for this video. Yes, we're doing science too! There's nothing more anti-climatic than getting one of those " Accessory Unavailable " pop-ups when trying to be productive on iOS, yet it's something we have to deal with quite often. Then there's the " Accessory may not be supported " one too. So I am also going over the most common dongle connection error cases and I am also explaining why I recommend using the Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter, over the Camera Connection Kit aka CCK.

I’ll put that to my “Nice to know” collection.

Ok this is eerie. This video directly addresses a problem I was trying to solve literally 2-3 hrs ago. I was about to buy a new hub and then I decided to enter this video thread. WTF!!
