I found a griffin studio connect. I used to have one and it worked perfect but that was when I had an iPad Air and I had to use some kind of pin adapter.....will the griffin work with my ipad2.?

It depends on which connector it has! I have one that I got for my iPad2 for next to nothing (and works great) on Amazon because I think they were trying to get rid of their stock of 30-pin devices. I have even used it successfully with Lightning-based iPads using an Apple conversion device.

  • The griffin has turned he 30 pin plug and my iPad is 4gen with lightning..... I just found out it was because he 4th gen

  • If you have an iPad with a lightning connector and no interface yet, don't buy an obsolete 30-pin interface and an adapter. Just get any one of a plethora of available USB interfaces that are class compliant and use a CCK3 for simultaneous charging. That'll be a lot more future proof.

Well said. I was thinking the same thing. USB > Hub > CCK3 > iPad .

Eventually USB > Hub > USB-C > iPad without having to change the device.

  • I have a cck but getting an interface that is USB are there any issues with the interface needing enough bus power?

Depends on the interface. If so then you can use a powered hub.

  • What interface would you suggest? Would a behringer interfac work and sound just as good as she he mor expensive ones? Feel free to offer suggesions

  • With the CCK3 you can plug in a Lightning cable as well. That helps in a lot of situations and charges the iPad at the same time. Some interfaces are self-powered via a wall wart.

What's your budget and how portable do you want it to be? Do you just want a guitar input and stereo outs or do you want to have mic inputs? Mic pres and phantom power are where power supply becomes an issue.

  • I do not need it to be portable at all. I'm using it mainly for my guitar and I need outputs for a studio monitor

  • Ohhh and budget I need to be as cheap as possible, I would like to get buy with $50 but if I need to I can go as high as $99

The Behringer U-Phoria UM2 sounds like a good fit. $29 in the US. I haven’t used one myself, but have heard good things about it.

You would also need the Apple USB3 Lightning adaptor and a simple USB hub. Unfortunately the USB3 adapter is as expensive as the UM2. But it’s pretty much a necessity.

Another good thing about USB Class Compliant devices is they can be used with a PC or Mac if you ever need to do that.

  • The iRigHD 2 runs less than $99 and comes with both lightning and USB adapters. It has both a quarter-inch mono instrument output suitable for plugging into an amp and stereo mini plug output that can be used as headphones output or as a line level output by dialing down the output.

It is small and power consumption seems efficient. It requires no battery.

It’s true the iRig would work without a USB3 Lightning adapter, making the overall cost not that much more.

I prefer using my iRig plugged into a USB hub with my other midi devices or with the USB3 Lightning even though it does include its own lightning adapter.

  • I use a Focusrite iTrack Pocket I got for $10.
It has 1/4 inch input, and it is also a stereo mic.
It doesn’t have output, but you can probably the headphone out.
The connection is micro USB, so I use the same cable I use to charge my phone.
I plug it into a 30pin CCK to connect it to my iPad2.

I usually use my Air2, but I used to use an iPad2.

I was able to check this setup on the iPad2, running Tonestack in AUM.
It held up really well. I used a 256 buffer. Many presets ran fine on very high quality setting in Tonestack. All of the presets I tried ran fine on medium setting, and sounded fine to me at that quality setting.
I think you should be fine using an iPad2. If you don’t have Tonestack, try Tonestack Go. I think it is free to try right now.

  • I have a. Ipad4 not an ipad2

  • I have increased my budget for audio interface to $130 so now I'm trying to find out which is better using a direct lighning connection or using a cck? Or does it even matter? This setup does not need to be portable in any way? So I'm trying to decide should i go with something small like an irig hd/apogee jam or something like a presonus audiobox/focusrite i track solo? The only use is for me to plug my guitar in and jam.....just something simple.....these are my 4 choices so which would you get?

    Even better, then.

I don’t think it matters, USB/CCK or lightning.
USB/CCK is better for using it with different setups, being more universal.
Lightning is better for simplicity and a more convenient, compact setup.

  • I want to hear everyone's vote: here are my choices:

    1.presonus audiobox
    2. Focusrite scarelett
    3. Irig2 hd
    4. Apogee jam
    5. Shure MVi

Which would you get? Or are they all the same in quality?

Since you don't care about portability, I'd go with the Audiobox or the Scarlett, those give you the most options. The Scarlett is obviously a community favorite and seems to be on the desk of every Youtube music channel. Presonus makes solid hardware. I used to have a Firewire-based Audiobox and it was great. Feels solid with the metal construction. I don't know how the Scarlett feels, never had my hands on one, but I'd probably go that route myself (and I keep getting tempted to get one just because anyway...) It looks nicer than the Audiobox, to me. Plus the controls are more obvious and nicely separated compared to the Audiobox's knob cluster.

You could also consider what toss-ins offer more value to you, as well. The Audiobox comes with Studio One Artist, the Scarlett comes with Ableton Live Lite and some virtual instruments. Neither of which does you any good for iPad work, but if you also do desktop work it's worth consideration.

  • I’ve got the shure mvi and I can’t be happier (though I’m only looking to do practice and recording one track at a time). May be nice to have if you DO want to go portable.

Yeah i have definitely looked at that one and then there is m-audio m-track c series....i like that one because i the has lights that show you where your levels are at visually...i dig that kind of stuff

  • @Jdolecek48 Check out some videos of the Shure MVi. There are definitely lights that show you the levels and such, not sure if it’s what you’re looking for though.

  • I think I have narrowed it down to either the audiobox or the Scarlett although the Shure has caught my attention but then I saw the new m-audio m-track c series then you saw Steinberg has one worth considering lol too many damn choices....so far my #1 choice is the Scarlett....but I love the level lights on the m-audio.....like I said I dig the Scarlett but it's $120 but my budget is $99.....damn it I can't make up my mind

  • That's what you get for increasing your budget. :D

  • Mo’ money, mo’ problems choices.

  • If you get the Focusrite, make sure it’s second generation. The early Scarlet series had issues with clipping when used with high output guitars. They fixed it in the second generation.

  • So I was looking at the audio box ione , now going this route using he lightning connector can my iPad handle the. Power. Or am I better off going so with a powered hub, I just don't want to spend $100 and just find out my iPad can't give it enough power..... back of these audio interfaces because my three monitors are a 1/4 plug and a lot of them are RCA's do I want one with 1/4 I guess my fear is that if I get one with RCA some half years and adapter I will leave some type of quality that way but then again I don't know that's why am asking you good people

  • Decent quality rca to 1/4" adapters are not expensive and will last indefinitely.

  • Any love for the m-audio m-track c- series interface? It looks pretty slick but have not heard of anyone using it as of yet, then as I was researching I found out the guitar inputs for guitars were weak in the 1st gen Scarlett's so now I wonder if they are trust worthy, I then looked at the shure interface but it didn't have any main outs, I'm just trying to find an interface that meets my needs perfectly

  • I was thinking about the apogee jam but I also need my interface to tak over my iPads sound so with the apogee isn't that only for guitar? So if I'm not recording guitarbut I still have monitors plugged into the headphone out of the apogee will I still get audio output or is it only for he guita? I just need the highest quality of audio interfaces and for it to not jut take care of my amp sim quality but also my entire audio interfaces utput. Thoughts?
