For those who made the switch...
Has a bigger Ipad screen made a bigger difference?

  • oh heck yeah. the 12.9 feels so great for screen size, movies, reading, web browsing, its all delightful. Its funny when I'm in a room with a big HDTV, I will compare the perceived size of the movie on the wall to the size of it on my iPad in my lap. And the iPad is hands down always a "bigger screen". So for watching videos it is almost always better viewing experience than an actual TV for a 1-person show.

Only caveat is the bezels. I am envious of those who have been able to upgrade to the Gen 3 12.9 with smaller bezels. I literally laughed when I unwrapped my 2015 12.9 and saw how awkwardly large the bezels are. Of course, you get used to it but it is not in line with premium Apple design (they finally got it right this year).

And for music, yeah it feels great. Cramped apps feel... less so. tiny UI feels workable. Model 15 is just gorgeous for example.

  • I'm even enjoying the diff between 9.7 and 10.5. To me, it's noticeable.

  • The larger screen makes apps more playable on screen with less likelihood of hitting wrong notes, fiddly controls are less so, and it’s great for art as well. I am sure that going back to a smaller size would feel very cramped.

Hell, 10.5 to 11 is awesome, even if just for the bezels that Hmtx mentions. It’s a bit closer to widescreen, so that’s nice. I even notice subtle speed differences I the UI responsiveness (unrelated to the screen size question.)

The 12.9 is amazing though, can’t wait to replace my first gen with the third to get the smaller footprint and bezel reduction. For creative work and media consumption the 12.9 is king. The smaller brother only wins for one handed holding and out of the house portability.

I gotta say, when I walked through the Apple Store last week it was the 11" that gave me that :kissing_heart: "hey I'm hawt, you want to buy me!" look, not the new 12.9.

But I could never go back from 12.9 now that I've had it for 2 years

  • Those of you who have the latest iPads, how do you "cope" without the headphone jack?

  • The 11” is a huge difference coming from the 9.7. But it’s up to the app developers to support the size. If they don’t you will see black bars on the sides. Do some apps with rare or non existent updates may never support it.

Buy a $9 headphone adapter. It kind of sucks but Bluetooth headphones are so convenient I really love them. For the music apps that that don’t play well with them the adapter takes care of it.

Would be nice if they put the USB port where the old headphone jack was. Would anyone actually want it in the middle?

Yeah, I honestly didn’t use the 3.5mm jack much anyway. It was usually either AirPods for convenience or I was using an an audio interface and had a jack. The USB-C to 3.5mm adapter works great for the rare cases I want wired quality without an interface.

  • Lack of headphone jack didn’t bother me at all, the single is super small and always in my headphone cable these days anyway.

  • The 12.9 is an unwieldy slab of glass, but by Zeus is it nice to have so much space for floating windows in AUM!

When I switched from an Air2 to an 10.5 I was really happy because the bigger screen. It’s a difference...

Then I bought a 12.9 (2.Gen) and WOW, what a huge difference. I have so much fun to use it especially with IOS Music tools. I really won’t missed anymore!

    But...
I still use happily my 10.5 when I want to be mobile. The 12.9 is unbeatable at home but I don’t like it carrying around because of the much bigger size and weight.

May this video is interesting when it comes to the 3.Generation.
Henny did a great review, talking about his new 12.9. First he got an 11’ but after few days he changed it for an 12.9. You can feel that he is very happy because the bigger screen compared with his old 10.5.

I really like his honest review and love his style talking about the iPad Pro. 😊

  • Great info thx!
One concern is that some apps wont take full advantage of the bigger screen.
    Has anyone experienced this?

Some apps don’t take full advantage of the bigger screen, but that doesn’t mean you won’t benefit. If you can pinch and zoom, etc you’ll be squinting less and have more of an area to work with. Sometimes after being used to the 12.9” I go back to my Air 2 and it seems frustrating to have less screen space. For example, SunVox doesn’t scale with the larger screens, but I can still take advantage of it by moving the interface around and zooming out.

A side note is that I prefer my Air 2 to throw in my bag and travel around if I’m somewhere where my car doesn’t go. The 12.9” is a lot bigger. More screen to break, I don’t have a proper case for it. It’s more expensive to replace, etc.

  • My wife and I updated both our iPads last year, she got the 10.5 pro and I got the 12.9 even thought she argued at me that it would be too large and useless for me. I carry my iPad 100% of the time, I rarely carry or use my iPhone at all. Now she is going to replace her new 10.5 with a the new 12.9 and she will not be borrowing my 12.9 all the time.

The real difference between the two is the improved control you get with your fingers, particularly if they are large. This is especially useful for complex music apps with tons of complex crowded controls like Auria, or large midi/note editing screens also like Auria and Gadget.

Its also great for dual screen multitasking. Each screen is feels the same as a 9.5 screen. It really makes it easy to use dual screens for for than just a few quick copy and pastes.

After a year with my 12.9 I have not found a single situation where I could have used my old 9.5 and couldn't have use my 12.9 just as comfortably. Like I said I do take my 12.9 everywhere I go, 100% of the time so I really exercise its portability.

I use and love my ZUGU case, it puts a 12.9 inch sheet of metal across the iPad's screen to protect and has really thick rubber protecting the corners and edges, Its a little heavier that cases I've used before, but the little extra weight is worth it! And it never slips and falls while in kickstand due to its strong magnets attaching to the metal cover unlike all of the cases that just have notches to hold them up.

Yeah, I thought so. My issue is that I have a few pro mixing and mastering headphones, and I actually do use headphone jack a lot. Bluetooth headphones (the only pair I have) with the mic are not supported by Cubasis for example, and with some apps they work fine, but with others it is bad. That said, I don't like to get used to non-pro headphones if you get my drift.
All that said, when I switch to new iPad, need to buy at least a pair of really good bluetooth cans for music making. Any recommendations?

Yeah, that sounds like a habit that I will need to incorporate as well. I am too wired :)

  • In addition to using my 12.9 for iOS music-making, which I LOVE, I also use it for sheet music (with ForScore). Coupled with a Bluetooth page turner I no longer have to deal with unwieldy 4/5/6/7-page charts that I'm sometimes required to read when playing drums.

YES. I love my 12.9 pro. It is perfect. i have the ipad 9.7” too. Def prefer the larger screen.
the pro has developed some light yellow banding around the edges of the screen. only noticeable on white backgrounds.

I walked into Apple Store for an appointment to replace batteries on my MacBook 2012 and 6s 2015.

The new 12.9 form factor is highly optimal for those looking for big screen. If you carry it around (like Henny does in his gear backpack), it will go anywhere. However, if you just wanna take it to your work (like I do in my small briefcase bag that fits Air 2 snugly) and take it to meetings to check on your personal stuff on or a flight, it would give a “LOOK AT ME!!” impression. For working at a desk or on the lap, it is the king but holding it in one hand - even with its reduced bezels - will strain you very soon and affect your productivity.

The new 11” - yeah, this is the BEST optimal crossover between 9.7 and 12.9. Not sure why Apple released the 10.5 that is hardly different from 9.7 and not a reasonable tweener. 11” is a very light weight super-portable one-hander, WIDE-SCREEN and really “mobile”. It would give wide form videos from Screen Recording unlike the squarish ones from all other iPads (I don’t like these retro squarish videos with wasted space on both sides). It gives more horizontal room to work with in piano roll editor, timeline in Luma Fusion, etc. It is not too wide like 16:9 ratio that would dilute the purpose of a tablet - just wide enough to make a HUGE difference! The actual screen is about 1.5” wider and 0.5” taller compared to 9.7 but the overall size is almost the same as Air 2 with bezels and full leather case on (a bit wider by may be a half inch). The book form factor is the issue I noticed for a long time on iPads and also posted a discussion, “Would you wish for a widescreen iPad?”. The response was a huge negative  but prayers answered

    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/25708/would-you-wish-for-a-wide-screen-ipad

Apps may take a long time to update to accommodate the new rounded screen corners - until then, there will be some wasted space around the edges with shrunk UIs. That would not matter to me because CUBASIS is all I need and they are on track to update the app to new resolutions in their next release:

    https://www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=183&t=146915

The cool thing about the new folios is - we can take it off and put it on quickly as many times as we want without wear-n-tear as it does not cover sides. The keyboard folio will add some bulk to the Pro - I prefer just the folio without the keyboard.
