Is AudioLayer worth buying?

Thinking of using as an AU sampler within Apematrix. Is it significantly better than the built in Au Sampler?

  • They are 2 different instances of Samplers:

AudioLayer is like a ROM-pler. You load samples that are assigned across piano/l=keyboard ranges to duplicate the presets of a Digital Stage Keyboard like Nord makes. High quality presets for Pianos, EPs, strings, etc. The ROM's hold the recordings of the real instruments that get triggered.

The ApeMatrix Sampler (and most other IOS Samplers) are wave file playback devices (with Looping) that can manipulate the audio of a sampled recording. Some cut the sample into slices and they can be triggered with MIDI Note or PAD events.

Two different takes on the Sampler like the difference between
a Kurzweil Keyboard and an Akai MPC. Typically used by (1) Keyboardists and (2) DJ/GrooveMakers.

That's my view of the question and my answer. You'll want both types for different reasons and be frustrated with the missing features in both too depending on your experiences with real hardware or other similar apps.

The only other apps similar to what AudioLayer does are Lyra inside Auria Pro, BS-16i with good SF2 Libraries and (some tell me) BeatMaker3's Sampling tools. We should see more overtime as IOS eats the hardware keyboard market.

  • Sorry. I should mention...

The App's like ApeMtrix Sampler include @VirSyn's ReSlice, Samplr, BM3 and many more inside a lot of GrooveBox type apps.

There are experts here that can direct you if you provide more details on your use cases and expectations of a sampler.

  • Thanks for you reply. Its not what I am looking for in that case

  • I've got all the above but preferring to work in AU only mode and BM3 wore me out in the end!

  • We really need 2 labels we all know for these different App types like:

    1. Keyboard Sampler
    2. Slice Sampler

I'm an #1 guy and I think many here are #2 but I think we learn and benefit from each other's skills and backgrounds.

  • Audio Layer can play back samples using more sophisticated ways to do so including velocity, layers and round robin. You can import EXS24 files. You can also import your own samples into Audio Layer and create your own drum kits or instrument plus it has its own built-in effects. It has the ability to use a large number of samples and uses disk streaming so your iOS device doesn’t grind to a halt.

    .
The AU Sampler in apeMatrix is much simpler though very useful in its own right but very different from Audio Layer.
