Jordan Rudess

I was thinking back to 2011 before iPad music production technology advanced as far as it did. Remember when that guy's name was everywhere? Whether it was his own apps, or whether app developers mentioned his praise for their apps? Crazy days. :P

So why was his name so prominent in the music app scene back in those days?

  • Everywhere? Really?

  • I guess he was a prominent musician who also happened to be an enthusiastic early adopter of mobile/touchscreen music.

  • He was the keyboardist in prog metal band Dream Theater and had/has some serious keyboard chops. I think he got a lot of press with iOS music apps since he lent credibility to iOS as a true music/musician's platform.

Was? I thought he still is. I've followed his apps and bought all except this new one as it lacks the originality factor I want. But still, I checked out Dream Theater only after this latest app came out, and he's a pretty incredible musician. Top stuff. Shame about the singer :-)

My thoughts exactly on DT. Was loving the first song I heard...until the singer joined the party. Does anyone know of similar music that is either instrumental, or does hasn't such a cheesy singer?

I've been a Dream Theater fan since I was about 15 (12 years ago) and while I'm not huge on most of Jordan's 's material with the band (not saying this is because of Jordan) I do think he's an amazing musician.

If the vocals turn you off (they did for me for a while too) there are plenty more prog metal bands out there. Try these:

    Symphony X,
    Andromeda,
Liquid Tension Experiment (Jordan was in this band before he joined Dream Theater, and it also contains DT'sguitarist and ex-drummer. Instrumental.),
    Ayreon, Fates Warning.

  • The greatest proggy band, hands down, is Oceansize. Absolutely bloody incredible. Genius. Mind blowing. Yesps.

  • Frost* a mixture of prog, a little pop and hard rock. Not known for being entirely sensible. But +1 for the first LTE album: all instrumental without being bogged down in metal

  • I love how threads evolve. :D

Jordan is pretty damn awesome alright! :D I figured it was because he was one of the first guys to lend credibility to using iOS to create music. I'm wondering if he didn't come along, would we have as many good apps to use and create music with?

So, does he have any solo albums I can purchase?

  • His latest...even allows you to take part to,some extent!

  • Check out porcupine tree. Fantastic band, keyboardist is Richard Barbieri (sp?) ex-Japan.
Saw them support DT once and didn't stay for the headliners. Sorry, Jordan :)

  • Ian, your needle's stuck...

  • iansainsbury really likes Porcupine Tree I think :p They are a great band, though I prefer Steven Wilson's solo stuff generally.

Pain of Salvation are also fantastic but may take a while for some to get into. I would recommend starting with The Perfect Element Pt 1 or Remedy Lane for anyone interested.

  • Remember Toni Levin was in LTE too, who also has its own app...so Mr. Rudess is not an exception.

  • What app does Levin have??

  • Ah...I thought you meant a music app. Interesting still though. Thanks for that. Also, Brian Eno was involved in Bloom quite some time ago.

  • And Peter Gabriel, and...

  • Listen to Opeth

  • But be aware that most Opeth albums contain some degree of death metal growls and the music is often substantially heavier than Dream Theater. The last two or three albums are less full-on, and I'm pretty sure the latest one, Heritage, has no traces of death metal. It's more a bit psychedelic I guess. Damnation is devoid of any metal whatsoever. The main man, Mikael Akerfeldt is a huge fan of 70s prog. I think Heritage and Damnation are the best starting points for Opeth.

  • This has nothing to do with JR but while Prog is being mentioned check out Steven Wilson's (Porcupine Tree) latest recording from earlier this year "The Raven that Refused to Sing" which is easily the best new Prog I've heard in years. Just an excellent recording.

  • Have I mentioned Porcupine Tree?

  • Or Blackfield or No Man...both with Steven Wilson.

  • Ooh, mentions of Opeth and Pain of Salvation stemming from a thread about Jordan Rudess... This thread just keeps getting better.

  • I remember seeing JR playing with iPhone apps in 2009. It's one of the things that lured me to the iPhone. I already knew him from Dream Theater. Personally, the only Dream Theater albums I really enjoy are Images and Words and especially Awake, both of which feature Kevin Moore on keys.

Since we're all listing proggy bands....
A.C.T., Haken, Leprous, and Circus Maximus
