  • I have H2N, and really like it. I would go for a better unit though, I got such a screaming deal that I couldn't pass it up.

  • The Rode i-XY is what I use too, it's excellent and works great with the iPhone. Except for monitoring though I never did that anyway.

Force of habit. I used to be a location sound recordist. No sound = no job. Seriously though, it's a lot easier to fix something while you are recording than to take it back, realise that it's not good and have to go back and do it again. Particularly if the thing that's no good is the prime minister talking.

  • Zoom h6 its a true ipad companion, working very nice as a audiointerface with huge control
and off course great recorder. Iff you want recording into iphone or ipad loocking at sennheiser ambeo.
Its a fantastik binaural microfone , apogee audiointerface and good headphone speacker in one gadget.

    I use a zoom h6 it’s a beast...
It’s also an audio interface and a standalone multitrack audio recorder mixer in the clutch

I also have an h6 and it is awesome, it was $300 on reverb, the h5 is very similar and can be had in the $200 range. H4n is good too but the h5 and h6 have better preamps in them, real gain knobs, and a pad for line input.

H4n is good, but h5/6 definitely better.

The H5 has served me nicely the past few years. Sounds decent and has lots of options. It’s too big to throw in a pocket, but I usually have a small pack to toss it into. It has a nice feel for the price, doesn’t feel cheap at all. Good luck on your search!

Thanks guys, the H5 and 6 look really good, but a bit out of budget, and more than I need really. At the moment it looks like a toss-up between an H2 and an H4 :)

Are you not happy with the quality? I notice it doubles up as a USB mic which would be useful for me.

Thanks, I’ll check that out :)

  • Thanks again for the feedback on this, it looks like Santa will be bringing me some books on weird music, a sensible shirt, and (with a bit of luck) an iTunes voucher instead. I couldn't make my mind up quickly enough before the Amazon North Pole Division delivery deadlines.

However, my favourite ended up being the H4N Pro - which seems to cover all the things I want, without spending extra on things I don't need, so I'll be keeping an eye on the new year sales.

Nice - I can't speak highly enough of mine.

Zoom iQ7 looks cool- lightning connector, mid side stereo microphone, a real knob for gain, headphone jack. $79

I have it, I use it regularly and it sounds as good as the H1 and H2 recorders with the big difference that I can use the sounds instantly :)
Make sure you're using an iPhone/iPad case that isn't too wide or the Lightning connector won't connect properly.
As long as it doesn't add more than about 2 millimeters you're good to go.

I’ve just received my Zoom H6. Need to do some more testing, however ..... it looks like AUM sees ALL the inputs (set zoom to interface / multitrack / pc mode).... might be selling my Behringer 4 port interface very soon.... need to do a bit more testing first tho. The recorder is very easy to set up and navigate. Well happy.

Wow that’s good to know, I wonder if the H4 does the same?

Not sure. I will be making a video on my new set up tho - so easy to set up. Had my po-33 going via the H6 to AUM, adding effects and monitoring the result on the H6. Tonight i’m going to add volcas and some AUs from AUM. The only thing it doesn’t do is midi, but I have another gizmo for that 🙂🙂🙂

Very cool. I might test my Zoom R16 to see if it can do that.

I like the look of the H6, bit out of my budget though unfortunately.

I was a bit lucky and received a reward for good behaviour (at work) so thought I’d put it to some good use 🙂 ...

    Nice!

Unfortunately my car failed it’s MOT yesterday, and it’s terminal this time, so no ideas about recorders for me for a while :(

Oh yikes! Cars are (potentially) more important. Good luck.

Thanks! Yeah, going to be pricey unfortunately. Still I've had this one for ten years, and it was ten years old when I bought it - but it'll now cost more to fix than it's worth, so time to bite the bullet and get a new Monzmobile.
