Call for testers: Audiobus MIDI learn

Hello!

Good news! MIDI learn is right around the corner, and it's pretty cool (it even does connection panel stuff, as well as AU params, gains, app switching, tempo changes, preset switching, etc). In fact, I hope to have it released by Christmas. But I need a bunch of help testing it out!

Care to take it for a spin? Please sign up at https://audiob.us/testing - if you're already signed up, you should already have a copy ready to play with.

Thanks!

    I've just had a ride.

    One word:

    GAME CHANGER!

... and I'm not even kidding. If you use audiobus live this will actually make your head spin.

It is also super straightforward. No hidden menus etc.

    Perfect.... on release

  • oh hello!!!! I will be testing :) :)

  • Hi @Michael looks great thanks for this bit late in uk but will give it a good old Go tomorrow testing it with some controllers cheers.

Just downloaded. I can't stop smiling. Agree 100%!

  • 100 % game changer for live aficionados !!! Thanks @Michael for that huge new feature B) B) B)

  • Regarding Pick-up mode vs value jumps:
What type of relative/incremental MIDI CC is currently supported?

  • Hmm, I'm not very up on terminology I'm afraid; can you explain a bit more what you mean @rs2000 ?

  • Of course

Here's a nice summary in section 27.2.4 (I'm mostly using Ableton Live, but other DAWs should have similar controller support):
    https://www.ableton.com/en/manual/midi-and-key-remote-control/

Here's an example implementation of a sender on a cheapo Arduino that apparently supports the three main protocols:
    https://tttapa.github.io/Arduino/MIDI/Chap04-MIDI-Controller.html

  • My controllers are Behringer BCR2000, BCN44, Arturia Beatstep, Lemur. Ready to test :)

  • Oh of course - just didn't click that that was what you were talking about; yeah, just pickup presently. If I have time before release I intend to add more (as well as controller curves/ranges), but if I don't make it, it'll be in a later release.

Relative controllers would add a rather unique feature to Audiobus: Being able to properly control instruments and effects without parameter jumps, and for any AB3 compatible app. Another feature for the future could be parameter feedback (LED rings on hardware controllers, control surfaces like Lemur/TouchOSC/TBMidiStuff etc) that is mostly missing in iOS apps.
Just take your time to do things right, like you always did 👍🏼

  • The email form says that I already signed up, but I have not received a TestFlight build yet.

  • Yaj pickup mode signed up i want to try this

  • App launch is a cherry on top, and it is instant!

I feel I don't need the home button anymore.

  • The whole thing is very well thought out and executed. Nice work here, @Michael! It is not hyperbole to say that this changes everything for live performers. This makes AB "THE tool" for live players.

  • Has anyone had success getting midi in from another app to control audiobus. trying to get it with Auria and xequence but no luck.

Is Audiobus only listening for hardware?

Yes, hardware only. I’ve asked @michael for that too: Core midi support for AB midi learn!!! <3 KRFT and TouchOSC needs this in my case, killer setup in perspective B)

  • Okay, I've enabled Virtual MIDI (app sources) - ready for the next build.

    Greaaaaat :) :p

  • Wow that was fast!

The new AU preset loading was not expected but is awesome. Every day in this beta is like Christmas!

It doesn't seem quite fair to ask Santa @Michael for more but any plans to include MIDI options for "load next AB preset"? This would help live players with limited buttons at their feet (blueboard, etc).

  • Hehe, that's great, @lukesleepwalker =)

That's a good idea - I'll do it, but not in this initial release; until then, you could add a binding within each preset which is the same trigger, which just loads the next one in the queue.

  • Is beta still open? I’d be glad to test these awesome new features!

Another present under the tree this morning!

@Michael The tip you mentioned above about including the same MIDI binding in each preset works great. You might put something in the documentation about that feature as I suspect others will be looking for one-button preset switching.

  • On the first day of Christmas my Michael gave to me: Audiobus control by MIDI;
    On the second day of Christmas my Michael gave to me: preset recall with Audiobus control by MIDI;
On the third day of Christmas my Michael gave to me: MIDI messages, preset recall, with Audiobus control by MIDI

    :D

    Hahahaha, good one!

  • So currently the only way to use an app for the midi learn source is to use virtual midi from the sending app, but you can't send midi via an Audiobus midi lane? I've been trying this but no luck in case I've done it wrong :)

  • Will midi learn (for AU parameters) work for hardware controllers only or midi apps are supported too?
