Cubasis

edited December 2013 in General App Discussion

Hello everybody. I finally bought the bullet and bought cubasis the other day. Wasn't going to as I already have auria but as it was on offer so I thought I would give it a go. What I want to know is, is anybody having issues with it on ipad 2. I keep getting random glitches when it is playing. I chopped up a loop to recreate another one but it sounds like it's chopped poorly. It particularly happens between the end and beginning of the bar when it is looping but can also happen anywhere. I checked all the samples and all seems ok, I even added a bit of fade in to them. If I fade it in a lot it will get rid of the clicks but then I have a drum sample without a transient. Pretty lame. Is this a recent issue? Or is it just me, am I missing something?

  • Cubasis works better from within Audiobus. Make sure you start AB first. Also set buffer in AB to 512. The buffer size makes the difference. You can test this using the Micrologue Synth in Cubasis. Also what helps is having at least 3.5 gig free on your ipad. Hope this helps.

  • I just switched over to Cubasis from Beatmaker 2 on my iPad 2 a few days ago.

I get very bad glitching in Cubasis when I play the demo songs (w AudioBus running 1st or without). I was bummed out when I first played it...

Did a hard reset and cleared a little space on my iPad. (I usually keep between 4-5 GBs free on my 32 GB unit.). Not sure if that helps, but that plus making sure to freeze pretty much everything that I add to my tracks has allowed me to use Cubasis pretty much hasslefree. I intend to try freezing all tracks on the demo at some point to see how it plays on my iPad...

I have to say, I really love using Cubasis. AudiBus and IAA have been working very well. My workflow is already way better than it was on BeatMaker 2.

Some of the UI design is a little wonky, but Cubase was always like that, in my opinion. Getting both Cubasis and Electrify NXT in the past few days has made this a banner week for me! :-)

  • What Morris said:Cubasis runs always at a 256 buffer size and you can't change it from inside the app.But starting audiobus first and set it to 512 should do the trick.

  • @Crabman, can you play the demos on your iPad 2 w no glitching after setting to 512?

  • I had loads of trouble on iPad2. But as Morris says, AB helps. I've seen several mentions on freezing channels. I know how to do this on PC Cubase but haven't found the option on iPad. So how do I freeze? It works better on Air overall but still some performance issues.

  • @sickmoth, tap the little snowflake icon on the far left of the MIDI tracks (under the truck number). This will generate an audio track and freeze the MIDI track for you.

  • @sickmoth freeze is the little snowflake icon.

  • Yeah... I've been looking for that icon but I must have a blind spot. Is it only an option on MIDI then? That would explain why I'm not seeing it. I'm all about audio.

  • Thanks for all the input. Tried it in audiobus, much better. Not noticed anything yet. Been looking at clearing some space. Tricky. Could it be time to delete bm2? Almost attached to it, bm1 was the first app I bought.

    Double post. Soz :-)

  • Cool, @Oldman. Definitely know what you mean re. clearing space... I've had to make some deletions that pained me LOL!

I can't believe I actually had to delete Sampletank today. That hurt, but good to know its a home where it came from, and I can get it back.

    LOL, @mgm4871!!!

  • Oops, sorry for the misspell @mgmg4871

  • I don't have any problems with running Cubasis and playing the Demos on my iPad 2. There are a LOT of tweaks that you can do to iOS 7 that saves CPU, battery, and RAM. In addition, there are a lot of best use practices that can help any DAW you use in general that keeps things managable. Look up the many iOS 7 tweaks that are available, and then try the following:

    http://forum.audiob.us/discussion/2092/post-your-tips-to-get-the-most-out-of-your-system-#Item_49

I would prefer to upgrade to a new tablet, but I can't this year, so I'm stuck making do with my iPad 2 until then. It's still a useful machine if you are careful with it. :-)

  • Great thread, @Audiojunkie, thanks for posting the link to it. I missed that one... I used to optimize my old PCs for desktop DAW usage and the logic carries over with the items listed in the thread's discussion.

I am pretty careful w optimization techniques in my own songs, I think that's why I'm not getting any glitching. But, I will definitely go through all of the suggestions that I'm not already doing to see if I can get rid of the glitching on the "On and On" demo for Cubasis. It drives me nuts, plus I think it's a good benchmark for where my iPad is in terms of optimization with the app. It's intriguing that you can play the track w/ no glitching. I feel challenged to get my iPad up to snuff :-)

My big setback is that I like to write for a lot of parts (often layered percussion and horn sections w standard rhythm section). The Mozart in me is just not that strong, I guess. I need to hear the parts hitting at the same time as I write. This forces me to turn up the polyphony.

I'm not a big fan of combining/bouncing together tracks, because it's a lot of work for me to sort everything out if I want to go back later and redo one of the parts. The freeze function is a blessing as a workaround for this, though.

I hope to upgrade my iPad soon. I think that will be a big help, too.

  • Does Cubasis run better on new iPads? Yes. Just ran the On and On demo without AB or any optimization with no glitches.
    Air 128, 7.0.4

  • That doesn't surprise me too much, @TedBPhx, still but good news to hear. Just makes me more anxious to pick up a new iPad. :-)

  • Thanks for the tips, Morris and everyone else...still on ipad 2 32gb here and new to cubasis. Can't believe you deleted sampletank...I bought the orchestral pack recently and hope to use it soon with cubasis. Although my ipad is about to explode...

  • Interesting...just closed all apps, put it in airplane mode, no AB, opened On and On in Cubasis and it played fine, no glitches. Perhaps this ipad 2 has some life in it yet. Or has the large Laphroaig Quarter Cask I've just knocked back affected my judgement?

  • @ainsainsbury when your drink costs more than the DAW you're obviously doing something terribly right.

  • Interestingly I used to have no problems with Cubasis on my iPad2 32 GB prior to upgrading both Cubasis and to iOS7. Now I still get glitches and timing issues even when I only have a couple of audio tracks if the clips are longer than a few seconds. I notice it particularly when I run AB and load in Amplitube in input slot and Cubasis in Output slot. And, yes, I make sure I have > 4 GB free space, close all apps properly, go to airplane mode, reboot and then do a deep refresh with cMemory before I start a recording session!

I too am hoping to upgrade next year, when the next iPad comes out! :)

  • I tried the "On and On" demo w/ no other apps running and in airplane mode. No AB. I still get very quick glitches in the sound. Sound drops out very fast, but track keeps playing... No love for my iPad 2 from Cubasis...

I'm looking forward to trying out the tweaking mentioned referenced above sometime in the next week or so...

  • I'm still IOS6. Maybe that's the difference on the ipad 2?

  • I am still on 6 also and do not plan on updating to 7 at all. I have enough music apps for a lifetime already so if the developers make it 7 or nothing , than nothing it is. At least until I update pads at some point in my future. I think my next big purchase will be a nice audio interface for use with cubasis. I want to be able to record karma tracks into it from my Korg M50.

  • I wonder if that could be IOS 6 could be making a difference. I was reading through the Cubasis forum and there are a few people reporting glitching audio, mostly on IOS 7. One of the threads:

    http://www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=183&t=52111

  • For me, its glitchy beyond being useful on an iPad 3. It seems to be related to particular apps and unfortunately Alchemy which is what I wanted to use. I know that probably means its taxing the CPU too much. Hope there an optimization for this...

  • I just tried the On and On demo on my iPad 3 iOS 6 and it was smooth as butter.

The glitching is a pain and I hope they resolve it for those experiencing problems.
