Headphones...

edited December 2013 in General App Discussion

Very sorry if this has already been covered, but couldn't find a thread. I want to get a good pair of headphones for mixing/mastering on my ipad. Now I know it can never compare or do justice to a good pair of monitors, but my living arrangement and financial restrictions don't allow for it.

Picked up a pair of Sennheiser HD558's recently but haven't cracked them open yet. Thought I should ask here and see if a better recommendation popped up (same price point). Maybe somebody has gone through the process already.

Many thanks!

  • I use and would recommend Audio Technica ATH-M50. Bear in mind, I've not use the sennheisers you mentioned, but my friends and I have used these AT's for years. FWIW, they are also pictured in the latest issue of apptronica, in the advert for Bias. And as a guitar player, Bias (and everything else) sounds great through them. I'm certain that others have many great bits to offer on headphones. They've never let me down.

  • I use a set of Audio Technica ATH-M35's. Probably about half the price of the HD558's but great value for the money. You can get them on Amazon for about £60 GBP. Flat response and well balanced. Ideal for mixing on a budget.

  • I also use Audio Technica ATH-M50s. I've had mine for a few years now. I use them every day and I've been really happy with them.

  • Thanks folks, just reading up on the ATH-50's and they do seem more geared toward monitoring/mixing and might be more of a fit than the HD 558's... Will look more closely. Anyone else with some insight is more than welcomed!

Aren't HD 558s open back and the ATH M50s closed? From what I've read closed are good for recording so you don't get bleed and opens are better for listening and mixing so you can hear what it sounds like in air. Plus opens are supposed to be easier on the ears - less sound pressure.

  • I like Sennheiser HD650s, but they require amplification, the iPad can't really drive them adequately. They're very detailed and also one of the few headphones I've heard that can really do a good job on low frequencies.

I also have a pair of DT770 Pro, which are also great for lows, but the highs are a little bit hyped compared to my Senns.

Finally I also have a pair of Senn IE8 in ears, which surprisingly sound very similar to the HD650s, the lows are almost identical, it's only the highs which aren't quite as good/detailed.

  • I have some AKG 240 DFs that are wonderful but an iPad can't begin to drive them. Plus they are closed back and if I use them for an hour my tinnitus will ring for days. The HD 558s are looking good for iPad use. Been using a set of Koss Porta Pros with the iPad and they are easy on the ears but no ones ideal mixing phones.

  • For the last 20 years I've used Sennheisser travel/fold-up headphones. Here is one model on the Aussie eBay store.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Sennheiser-PXC-250-II-Travel-Headphones-/251405383292?pt=AU_headphone&hash=item3a88edb67c&_uhb=1

They can go anywhere, are light and comfortable, and have good bass.

They also have noise-cancelling - seems to be mid/low boost and white noise.

  • Just got my ATH-M50s shipped from US to UK, saved myself $66 even with the $34 shipping.

They sound great, but even more impressive is their ergonomics. They fit so comfortably on the head and around the ears. And the build quality is just superb. They have a cool springy snap when putting them on.

    Recommended.

  • Got some ath-m50 also. Love them. For the price, they are pretty good.

  • anybody know any good earphones not headphones for mixing music?

  • I have Sennheiser HD 280 pro and they are excellent, very flat full response.

For earphones I like the Shure ones

  • Keep in mind the power draw of big headphones. You might want a headphone amp. There's some good ones on eBay, search for littlebear

  • ^never noticed any issues with my sennheisers, had them for years

  • ^ as far as I'm aware you won't have any issues apart from a slightly different freq response than the headphones are capaple of. I have corsair gaming headphones and the difference with/without a headphone amp is a noticeable change in the bass frequency response.

  • I use these since about half a year now and they're fantastic, especially since they also have a built in mic. http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-429-Headphones-Smartphones/dp/B009HQTORS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1387780329&sr=8-1&keywords=sennheiser+hd429s

  • I keep my Sony MDR V7 since the 90th.

  • I've always liked my Sennheiser HD 25's. They are very light and portable, but tough as nails, and sound quite good.

  • What about the tale which says that using a normal stereo cable (tip, ring, sleeve) to send the iPad signal out can strees de DAC or the battery? Is that true?

  • Thanks for the insight folks. @TedBPhx, good point about the open back. I do like Sennheiser and they were very comfortable when I tried them in store. Thinking I will stick with them. As mentioned by @Buska, I won't get all that I can out of the headphones if plugged directly into my Ipad. Great suggestion about the headphone amp, will look into it.
