That bent on the pic seems huge to me...
My 7 Plus can have a slight torsion bent just by putting it off jeans pocket. No performance issue, you can see it when flat on a table, less than mm. Easily fixed with gentle fingers force. Seems that the tape between screen and chassis has more strength than chassis itself...
But again, that iPad Pro bent seems MUCH more huge than the ridiculously tiny one I’ve on my iPhone.
Beautiful devices made a bit too thin.
This is not typical Apple. If I had Apple stock... I might be worried at the moment.
When has Apple ever before simply admitted "visible defects in our premium devices are to be expected" Seems like someone misspoke or Apple has truly lost its way.
oh well, hopefully this means it will be easy to find a gently used, gently bent 12.9 for a great price sometime next year.
I was really glad to finally receive my Otterbox Defender for my new 3rdG 12.9 Pro. Certainly solves potential bending issues, but for me, the worst thing was how incredibly slippery the damn thing is! Nice to have it in a grippy rubber suit now.
BTW, re the 3rdG 12.9 Pro Otterbox Defender, it has a couple of issues potential buyers should be aware of:
Using the case lid as an upright support used to work great on my 1stG Pro, but on this case, the upright is too close to the lid edge and as a result, the iPad teeters almost vertically. You literally have to have your eyes at the same level to read it; useless for lap viewing! The upright piece needs to be moved back to allow another 5-10 degrees of "laid backness". I was happy to see that the lid depth is increased enough in this gen of the case to allow the iPad to be supported in portrait mode. Unfortunately, this is also compromised by the aforementioned issue. Upright in portrait mode, the iPad looks like a draft of wind would put it on its face.
I had to remove the plastic screen protector from within the case as it was next to useless for consistent taps and typing. I have had to do this for previous cases I had too. Before the case was finally ready for shipping, Otterbox had advertised that an Alpha Glass screen cover would be included free. I was looking forward to this as I knew I'd be ditching the case's plastic sheet. But, it didn't show up with the order! Emails to Otterbox are unanswered at this time.
In case this wasn't just me, I had thought, judging from the site's description and photos, that the Apple Pencil 2 would slot right in on the iPad's top and that the cover would actually cover it. In actuality, the flap just gives access to space enough to dock the Pencil for charging. When you open it to dock the Pencil, it conveniently pulls up the rubber along the top screen edge as well. You then look forward to 5-minutes of cajoling, forcing and massaging the rubber back into the grooves... thrilling! Something tells me that this flap is going to be joining the screen protector.
The Pencil can still be stored in the lid though, just like the earlier Pro cases.
Just checked, mine is not bent. I wonder what's the percentage of bent shipped 12.9 out there.
I can’t believe they are trying to say it’s normal.

Apple are what happens when companies believe their own hype for too long. They believe they can continue to charge whatever they want while reducing quality. Apple, like most companies are just about profit. They may have some really talented people who care that work for them, but they are overshadowed by corporate greed and arse licking the God of Money. They will continue to be great for so long, then as all things, will wither some, to be replaced with the next Mega Corp for a while.
Apple have always charged a lot, but at one time they did seem to mostly produce items that seemed to have good tech with decent build quality to match those high prices.
Most of this is irrelevant for myself really, as I’m unlikely to last long enough to see it all fall as evolution goes on its merry way, so will just make a few tunes along the way
Besides this we have now also another issue developing with iPads Pros from 2017
"Some 2017 10.5-Inch and 12.9-Inch iPad Pro Displays Suffering From Bright Spot Above Home Button"
https://www.macrumors.com/2018/12/19/ipad-pro-2017-home-button-bright-spot/
"Multiple users who were affected with the bright spot on their screens have been able to take their iPad Pro models to Apple for a replacement, but users who are no longer under Apple's one-year warranty or AppleCare+ have not had luck getting a free replacement device.
Out of warranty, Apple is asking customers to pay the display replacement fee, priced at $449 for the 10.5-inch iPad Pro and $599 for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro."
Yes, as with all other "gates" in the past, one in one million devices suffers from some strange defect, and that is then clickbaited 1000-fold out of proportion and Apple's umpteenth "doom" predicted
Moving on...
Typical fanboy behaviour that has luckily never having problems. These issues are not just a few persons screaming but result of massive threads on forums of peopel having the same kind of issues and are just ignored. Or as Apple just says "Bent It's Normal and Not a Defect" while on the pictures of their site you see an straight iPad. If your bending occurs after 14 days you just can't replace it anymore. And with the white spot issue of the 2017 Pro models. This issue occurs later and if it occurs after a year you can't replace it. Pressure on Apple could change their minds as with the defective screens MacBook Pro screens. Not move on but more pressure is needed in this sort of cases.
The hype is silly, but Apple’s reaction here is what is alarming.
Even if it is a tiny percentage of users who receive slightly bent iPads, they should immediately be replaced along with a $25 gift card “for your troubles”.
But Apple seems to be telling us these imperfections are normal. What a joke. Apple have lost their status as a manufacturer of premium computing devices if they really want consumers to accept this answer.
In related news, consider my interest in the rumored “Apple Car” indefinitely postponed. If they can’t build a 100% guaranteed flat iPad... well, there is no way I’m interested in them building a vehicle.
I actually think Apple will have to recall their statement, and replace any bent iPads as long as there is no sign of other physical damage, dropping, etc.
Yes I’ve got one of the shitty 10.5 Pros with the bright spot, just knock off the condescending attitude.
I've had to 're-bend' my Electribe 2 and the UNO Synth so they sit flush on the table without wobble
It's Apples hunt for slimmer devices that causes all sorts of issues, big slab of soft aluminium, battery that generates heat etc. and it will likely bend or deform at some point even during normal usage...
Nahh.. Apple are what happens when a company’s visionary founder is replaced by a guy whose main talents are maximizing margins and increasing operational efficiency.
They’ve become a company that excels at manufacturing and retail logistics, but has lost the knack for breakaway innovation, disruptive thinking and uncompromised first-of-a-kinds. It’s a bit of a sad sight to see.
Removing headphone jacks and thinner-at-any-cost engineering are neither innovative nor courageous. They’re weak imitations of what Steve Jobs used to do, but without the surprising streak of genius.
A bit of both me thinks
The money men usually come in eventually, whatever a company starts like.
Very well stated. I agree 99%*.
(* I removed 1% approval to efficiently slim it down, but you can buy that 1% separately as a dongle)
