OS version and AUM vs ApeMatrix cpu load / spikes
Hey guys... I haven't updated iOS version in a while, but I am noticing that there is a MAJOR difference in performance / cpu load between AUM and Ape, and its not looking good for AUM.
Compare:
Apematrix with Model15 AU driven by midi from Rozeta Bassline AU, While running, cpu holds at %14. No audio glitches when moving, resizing or opening / closing one or both active AU windows (by clicking the icon)
AUM with same two AU's running bounces between 32-44 percent when active AU windows are closed, 56-64 percent with one window, 67-72 percent with two, and noticeable glitches and pops if moving resizing or opening/closing AU windows.
Now... I assume this might have something to do with me being on 11.x ???
Is this a known situation or issue?
Lastly - is it safe to upgrade to 12.x yet for most audio apps?
Comments
Oh, and... Belated Happy Solstice you all, I'll prob post a NY's mix or track to celebr8
Those figures are not an absolute truth. AUM shows peak loads while Apematrix shows averages, etc. Also, neither app can know when the CPU is throttling itself etc.
Use these figures as rough guidelines, not as a way of judging the efficiency of their coding.
Well... no insane loud pops and glitches in Ape, so AUM is unusable to me at this point. And 12.x iOS update, go or no?
Are they both using the same buffer size? Sounds like AUM may be set to a smaller size.
For me 12 has been superior to 11 on all my devices. On new Pros make sure you get the latest version as soon as Apple releases it, because it will contain crucial CoreAudio optimizations.
Aw, good point, I'll check - as well as update the iOS. Thanks Boss Bos.
Boom - You are correct - I should have though of that! Forgot I set it super low for some vocal recording a bit ago...
It seemed odd to me also.
I can’t run two instances of Aparillo on AM without getting crackles, yet in AUM I’ve had four going without any problems at all. I’m guessing the LFO stuff uses a bit of juice.
yeah, i went through the same issue. set it up for 512 for most stuff is fast enough and keeps resources down. i use this for jams when i am not recording a live instrument in.
Of course you need to use the same settings for sample rate and buffer size when comparing two hosts like this.
But even then, as Bram said, AUM shows peak CPU usage (percentage of available CPU time used for total audio rendering), other hosts might show average usage (AUM used to do that some year ago), or even measure only rendering of hosted plugins/apps and not the internal engine itself.
AUM's meter is meant as an indicator of when CPU usage is high (more risk of audio drop-outs) as well as a relative measure to compare stuff inside AUM itself. But even that isn't very useful, since AUM can't know or control the CPU throttling managed by iOS. It would be more useful perhaps if I added a CPU meter for each AUM channel strip, to see where the juice is spent.
And then we have the various iOS bugs related to certain new iPad models etc, that seems to be triggered more by some of the graphic methods used in AUM (CoreAnimation), but should be fixed in 12.1.3 beta 2 according to my Apple contact!
@j_liljedahl yes, cpu peak per track would be great!
Can confirm 12.1.3 fixed a lot of cpu issues in general, still some wonky stuff going on randomly, sometimes just have to reset iPad or something in background randomly eating cpu bandwidth, haven’t narrowed down to exactly what if anything, because it seems to just do it eventually after opening, using, closing apps. Still random mic in use taskbar icon sometimes too when no audio app open, when tapped it’s always a random app that I wasn’t using.
AUM has given me almost no issues even a month ago on 12.0.1, keep up the hard work, you made an awesome app.
