Thanks Spider, I'm still on old but reliable AIr 1 so this helps.
Good to see lots of talented sound designers spending their time crafting in KASPAR!
@Spidericemidas : your presets are excellent and do a better job, imo, than the built-in presets at showing off what is special about this synth.
Up-thread there were some comparisons to LayR. In my opinion, KASPAR and LayR are so different that I don’t think comparisons are fair. KASPAR does sound very good and is easy to program if one understands subtractive synth basics. It has layers, but it isn’t a substitute for LayR. I think LayR is in a class of its own for complex layered sounds not just because it has no practical layer limitation, but because it’s architecture allows mind-bending sculpting possibilities and an attention to audio quality that is really special. I do t think of LayR as having just one oscillator per layer but as a synth that has multiple filters, envelopes, and LFOs per oscillator. It probably isn’t the right tool for a lot of sounds. But for some sorts of richly unfolding tones, it is a mind-blower.
This is not to detract from Kaspar, just to say that it is no substitute for LayR.
These patches are using between 3-5 layers, and I’m typically getting between 20-30% CPU for each one when playing them with Kaspar running standalone.
I guess you wouldn’t want to load too many instances of Kaspar at once as an AU.
I know its coding structure is probably not as efficient as something like LayR.
I just loaded two instances of Kaspar into AUM, one of them being driven by Rozeta collider, the other one being played manually, and the dsp was hitting 70% on my 2015 Pro.
I guess it also depends on how you like to work.
I’m really not a big user of the AU facility for anything, so I don’t have many instances of anything running at once. I tend to sample my sounds and get them into my music that way instead.
I’m guessing with something like Cubasis or BM3, you can load in an instance of Kaspar and record the audio, then freeze the track and remove Kaspar for loading into another track for recording as audio, then freezing that track, and so on. This method could save your CPU when using Kaspar, but I could be wrong about that as I’m not a big Cubasis or BM3 user either! 😊
Doug @thesoundtestroom might know about this method of recording AUs into a DAW.
Hope that helps! 😉
You are absolutely right! I have spent some time with LayR, and it is still in a class of its own for sound quality and capabilities on the iOS platform. Yes, it does work in a different way to Kaspar. Kaspar is good for quick and easy nice results. But when you can put the time and effort into LayR, the results are stellar, and it still blows all other synths out of the water by miles!
I did start a soundbank in LayR ages ago. But I was struggling with time. Difficult to do it justice. I wish more people would make soundbanks for it. It definitely deserves more love and attention than I see it getting. @brice LayR presets are unbelievable!
At some point I want to get back into LayR and continue building my soundbank for it.
The available range on the envelope times is enormous, the biggest I’ve seen on any synth!
I don’t think it can be beaten for making those long evolving atmospheric pads and cinematic scapes.
When I was programming it, I actually had to sketch out on paper first what I wanted each layer to do, otherwise I would get so lost in it!
It is definitely a pro sound designer’s dream!
I think my poor amateur mind collapsed at the thought of all the possibilities with it! 😊
Thanks @Spidericemidas Lots of helpful CPU details!
For the heavy IAA/AUs, recording to audio and removing them is necessary on the Air 1.
@Spidericemidas : nice tip re sketching things out on paper. Great idea!
For external MIDI, I just want to point out that KASPAR does not let the AU host regulate what MIDI channels etc it will respond to. It’s extremely annoying and both KASPAR and Kauldron have this problem. There is a way around it by routing to MIDIFire or something first to make it Internal MIDI. At least with KASPAR you can also address it individually by selecting MIDI channel within the preset. Still, Yonac has not fixed this yet after a year. I suppose I ought to email them one more time.
I like both Kaspar and Kauldron they both sound great to me. I dont care much for complicated sound design. I think I have 4 layers at most in KASPAR it’s a niffty synth. I suppose the real question is, do you need another synth?
We need more @Spidericemidas presets!!! For everything 😃 I know, I'm greedy 🤣 but the presets for sunrizer and kaspar always get my tracks moving and heading in the right direction
😲😅😁🙏
Glad to be fuelling someone’s creativity!
I wish there were more presets for Kaspar.
Pads, Atmos and Key/Pluck type sounds are more my ability, but I’d really like to have more choice of Bass, FX, Lead and Percussive sounds in it as well.
Maybe someone could start a thread here for a Kaspar soundfest? A Forum collaberation on a huge Kaspar soundbank would be cool!
Like the one for Zeeon, I think. Wasn’t there also one for Model 15, or something like that?
It would be great to have a more diverse collection in Kaspar with everyone’s different ideas and styles.

Was there a forum Zeeon bank? Would love to track that down.
Ya man! Pads, plucks, atmospheres, effects are my main sounds that's why they vibe so good with me ..
I have an obsession with brass synth sounds too, it's so nostalgic and satisfying, I tend to lean toward brass to substitute for leads, I don't use a lot of actual lead sounds but I do they are typically brassy or soft leads rather than loud ones that cut thru the mix and drown things out...
@Spidericemidas do you have music up digitally anywhere we can jam out too ?
Tx!
I used to have stuff on Soundcloud, and was enjoying the site a lot, but rather annoyingly not anymore since beginning of November, Grrr...🙄
I had a new track in progress, but I lost the place (and therefore the will) to finish and upload it.
Say, do you have Mitosynth?
Haven’t used it for ages, but was just messing about loading some vocal tone samples into it, and came up with a very pleasing breathy pad using the high pass filter.
Mitosynth has a wonderful labelling/categorising system for presets. AND a sharing facility! 😃
So I’m thinking of making a soundbank for Mitosynth now! 🤣
im currently making a bank for Kauldron. its gotten some bad looks on this thread but i love the filters.
Hey, nice one! I grabbed Kauldron the other day in Yonac’s sale. Haven’t had a chance to dig into it yet, though. Looks like a lot of features on it. I think it’s a good synth to have in the collection.
ive made some lovely lush pads on Kauldron. i enjoy the ui of the main synth page and the filters are really creamy.
Sweet! Can never have enough pads! Are you planning to release the bank into the community here? Would be great to hear them!
i intend to release all my patch banks from Sunrizer, Kauldron and Mood once they are finished. my patches are a little on the experimental side so it will take an open creative mind to put them to use.
@Spidericemidas @brice My apologies, it was my crappy headphones! (Beats bluetooth wireless). When I switch to my in ears I cannot reproduce it. Let that be a lesson to me! I will go back and add an edit to the original post so as not to put people off.
😊
Ah that’s brilliant! Experimental is good! I don’t do experimental very well myself, I like it, but I don’t have it in me to make those types of sounds, so I’m always up for having that side of things from other sound designers. There’s always a use for any sound!
Mood, you say? Excellent. I have it, but never used it! But I know it’s a brilliant synth. I just don’t have time to learn and program them all! So more Mood sounds would be great for me. Maybe one day I will get a chance to dig into it myself.
Looking forward to your patches! 👊👊
Hey, thanks for getting back to me on this.
Glad you resolved the issue.
Also good to know it wasn’t an inherent fault within Kaspar’s engine too. I could probably fix an iffy patch design, but I certainly couldn’t fix Kaspar’s engine! Lol.
No worries at all on the other post, it’s always worth raising any anomalies with anything.
😊👍
I assumed it was a deliberate homage/nod to the EDP Wasp!
Folks still pleased with KASPAR?
Man i used to use that one all the time, its great sounding. Especially the brice presets.
Ima have to break it back out and see if it still works
@ejacul337 @reasOne Yes, brilliant synth, I made a deep dive tutorial in June for Kaspar.
Totally yes! Kaspar is really great and very original with it’s morphing abilities.
